The Simpsons: Mobile Homer

by Walter J. Keegan, Jr., posted Mar 20th 2005 8:38PM
Simpsons Oh, The Simpsons, how we get from garage cleaning day to Bart stealing Homer’s motor home is your brilliance. While this episode did not elicit tons of laughs, there was enough subtle Simpson humor about SUVs, Turkish sailors and evil religious icons to save it. My most puzzling moment was Bart’s precognitive painting. Since it seems Homer never goes to work any more, Marge lets us in on what he’s doing there and who hasn’t spent hours at work Googling their own name? Couch gag – Homer removes a mask and reveals he is really Sideshow Bob and chases Bart around the room. Best Homerism: “It was more than a motor home, it was a car I could go to the bathroom in.”

Overall very good episode, but the garage cleaning section made me laugh so hard I was crying. Homer's spider-phobia/spider-poison induced delirium (lasting until late that night, apparently), was note perfect. There was not a wasted moment in that section, every bit was pure gold. Starting with Marge's fantasy of a buff Homer with a full head of hair being secondary to him actually getting the assigned job done correctly, to Homer's manly "What's the matter spider? Afraid to Die?" then he tip toes over daintily to the cardboard box... to "Charlotte's Dead" spider spray with a very sad-looking Wilbur to the envelope given to Lisa by bart... it to Lisa's CPR training statement being a parody of her own character, Bart follows with the same by producing a folding chair to whack Homer - pro wrestling style... it was amazing.

I liked how they played "Istanbul" by TMBG at the end of the show :).

One of the funniest episodes of all time - I predict this one will be a future classic. As long as they can crank one of these out once in a while I dont care how long the show airs.

The Simpsons continues to be an atrocious shadow of its former self. Last night's ep was another forced, unfunny outing that, while not quite as cringe-worthy as other recent eps, begs for the show to go quietly into the night. It jumped the shark about six seasons ago; please, greedy Fox execs, let it die already!
