ER has a bad history of not knowing how to get rid of characters. Some just slink away in a really unsatisfying manner (Jeanie Boulet, Dr. Benton). Some are killed off for no real reason (Dr. Greene). And some have a helicopter chop their arm off one day, and still another helicopter fall on top of them from the sky several months later (Dr. Romano). Now Dr. Carter is leaving [spoiler alert at the link]... next year to go to Paris and reconcile with Kem. He'll be back for a few episodes the following season, probably when
ER's ratings are in the dumper and they need a shot of adrenlin from a veteran fan favorite. But for the most part he's gone for good this May. Good luck Dr. Carter. Hope you have a good life. Just stay away from those falling helicopters.
