Mysteries afoot on Lost

by Keith McDuffee, posted Apr 8th 2005 10:28AM
lostSo what the heck is going on on Lost, anyway? Are they all really dead, existing in some sort of purgatory? A time vortex maybe? And what of the constant references to numbers? There's the cursed lottery numbers and those on the mysterious hatch (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42), the flight number (815) and the football aisles (8 and 15), the numbers on Boone's shirt (84), the blatant showing of Jack's fiance's shirt in the last episode (44), and undoubtedly many others. Remember, this is a J.J. Abrams show (Alias game, anyone?) There are also conflicting reports of what was actually said back to Boone on the plane radio: "We're the survivors of Oceanic 815," "There were no survivors of Oceanic 815" or "You're the survivor's of Oceanic 815?" Take your pick. In any case, we won't get our next dose of the show until May sweeps. Boo.
(UPDATE: We just saw the promo for the next new show in May, and they clearly redubbed the transmission Boone hears on the plane to say, "we're the survivors of Oceanic 815.")

My girlfriend and I both heard "There was no flight 815". Which I haven't really heard reports of from anyone else. Quite a bit more interesting in my opinion, but also much more problematic to the story.

Also, be sure to read up on more clues and speculation on that mysterious episode here: http://tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-24313/epid-397844/

Y'know, I never really thought about the repeating numbers as related to a possible time warp thing, though what's with the male voice saying "iteration #####"? I guess it could mean that someone outside the time loop is able to see what's going on and is reporting these loops. Another speculation I've read: Ethan is actually the grown-up version of Claire's baby.

I thought I heard "we're the survivors of oceanic flight 815." I wonder how they're going to bring the whole season to an end.

The time concept is interesting. I thought the person was saying "You're the survivors..." on the radio, but I haven't re-listened. This waiting for Lost and 24 is going to be the death of me. I'm not sure if the numbers are what we are supposed to be following or what at this point. All I know is that television is going to bite for a few weeks.

Having gone to the ABC site after reading the responses, the audio sounds to me like "we're the survivors of Oceanic 815". A co-worker theorizes that somehow the island is strangely bending time. Boone could be speaking to someone in the past or future. The "numbers" transmission heard by the French woman may have been herself repeating those numbers ad nauseam. Locke's dream of the future. As oppossed to purgatory, they could be trapped in time, not in a place.

the clip is very clear, though i suspect the audio was changed/cleared up for the clip, it says: "no, we are the survivors..." i suppose there could be another load of survivors anywhere on the island - it makes perfect sense - or it could be ethan's crew messing with them.

Exactly -- the CC is what a transcriber hears, not what he reads from a script. Word is on the Lost website there's a clip of that scene which very clearly says, "WE are the survivors of Oceanic 815," though I haven't heard it.

Seth, I had it on, and it read "There were no survivors of Oceanic 815". That said, JJ seemed to purposefully obscure it in the soundtrack, so I'm wondering if that was just what the script the CC guy got said.

Isn't Lost closed-captioned? Certainly someone with a TiVo and mute button can get us the actual text of the answer Boone got. No?
