The Contender: The Final Eight

by David Thomas, posted Apr 17th 2005 10:59PM
ContenderDoes anyone feel this show is dragging on? Every reality show I watch seems to just go a few episodes long these days. The Contender is no exception. This week there were only two fighters left, so there was no need for a challenge to see who would fight. Jimmy and Joey seemed like a boring fight and for the most part it was. But the knockdown at the end that signaled Jimmy's inability to capitalize on his opponents injury and the wild shots Joey could unload.

A big surprise was Juan dropping out from injury. But with the doctor giving him the word I think the other guys were a bit hard on the young boxer. He was the only one not washed up at this point and could be right to worry about his future. This was just a boring episode, boring match-up and didn't give a lot of payoff.

Next week promises two fights, thank goodness, and the guys bringing back yet another failed fighter to replace Juan. Let's just get to the title fight for a million already. And then NBC, DO NOT EDIT THE FIGHT. Sheesh.

If NBC doesn't renew The Contender, I'm sure some other network will be happy to pick it up...It has been the best reality TV I have ever had the honor to watch...Sly and Sugar did a great job with the show, and the fighters are the best...charisma and HEART...awesome young warriors...If you didn't watch the show, you missed out...If NBC doesn't renew the show...they miss out! Read the comments...everyone loved it!

Lenora sorry to tell you but Joey is out of the fights. I do agree with Sergio and Alphonso. Hope for sure that Jesse doesn't make. Definitely not my image of a true athlete, he is lazy and makes excuses. Hope there is another round of shows, it has given no hope to these fighters. Living in a area where we have produced a few fighters, who have gone bad it will be great to see these go forward in their lives.

"# 1 Fan to "A True Fan" Leonora Mendez, Leonora, I am happy to know that another woman had noticed the "greatness" in Alfonso and Sergio as I do... Alfonso and Sergio keeps me watching too... I have to listen to some people ignorance... asking me why am I like Alfonso and Sergio... because I am 'Black'... I see "no color"... I am a woman that luv's boxing... I would luv to see Alfonso or Sergio become "Thee Contender" I am a little worried about Alfonso... because of his height... but this great man is hungry... and he is a smart fighter... All he needs to do... is focus on his strength... Alfonso, you hit hard but you have to knock out your component... keep your guards up and stop dancing... Snake has that arm reach and I hope that Alfonso is watching Sergio's moves... Snake is a awesome fighter. Leonora, I am going to watch this show to the very end... Ms. Mendez, wouldn't it be nice if we can win some tickets to see the "Final" fight. ( The Number 1 Fan and a True Fan). However, if my two favorite fighters "Do Not" win; "May the Best Man Win", and God Bless all of the fighters/families, and "The Contenders' Staff"and family. Sly and Sugar Ray, you are wonderful, and I hope you guy's would team up again and do another show. (Perhaps, a Sitcom) Titled: Life Of A Boxer or "VISIONS" or Hunger Pains.( when you want something so badly it may cause physical or this emotional pain. The physical pain of boxing is all the training that is involved, and trying to balance other visions, family, and all other endeavors but one of the worst pain that a fighter may endure emotional is a "Lost") That vision of losing can be costly. But! "We must fall... But! We must get up" Number One Fan... India Collins

" The Contender is the "Best Show on TV. " Great fight Joey... "What a lucky punch?"... I love this show... about time... we have a show that doe's not exploit women... this show is about real families... whom... share the same VISIONS... "The Contender" is about "Real People". This fight is going as I planned... I am sure that... either... Alfonso or Sergio... will win. Alfonso... keep your eye's on Joey's right hand... Do Not get caught out there. Joey right hand is powerful... I luv you to Sergio... Joey fight with his emotions... and that can be risky... I want Alonzo and Sergio to remain calm... this fight his very competitive... but" everyone has the right to his own vision, dreams, and reason/s to fight... and the most important thing... respect one another... Remember!... Our children are watching this show... We need to teach our children... that it is fine to have differences... "The United States is one big "Salad Bowl" that is what makes America Beautiful... But" when one become deviant because of another person's choice... is very childish... and ignorant... I could only hope that "Thee Contender" would become a productive human being in Society... and with that said... I luv you Mr. Stallone, Mr. Ray, Sergio, Alfonso and "All the Contender's staff and fighters" I would luv... if the staff would consider... having Ms. Juanita(ex-wife of Leonard), to share information about being "Wife, Mother, and friend of a "Boxer"(Positive information and some encouragement). I truely love the days of watching Sugar Ray Leonard... I never once saw any 'Anger" in this man even when he played his mind games and talked trash... I love those days... I love Ray and his family... I love the "Contender" but I Do Not see love in the sport of boxing.... "Where is the Love" #1 fan, India Collins

Last nights fight was sub par in my opnion. What is the deal with Jesse taunting? That doesn't belong in a professional fight. But then he made the excuse for his weight gain. I am glad one of his buddies stepped up and said he did by himself. Tommy was right on when he told him that Anthony gave him an extra pound and he still couldn't make it. He should realize come final night no one is going to hand him anything. Life just isn't like that.

Todd very confused by your post. All the boxers in my opnion are stars of the show. I don't recall one person standing out more than the others including Sugar Ray, Sly and Tommy. Where I live the show has yet to change time slots, still Sunday evening. Not only do reality shows make people sign contracts, think of regular TV have you have seen them leak out what is upcoming to the press, sorry but no. The contender in my opinion is great show, it shows real talent so I hope it stays around.

Hi Davit and lovers of Contender, I too thought Contender would be interesting, however, many of you have not been aprised of some of the big factors in its wake. It's original leading character was changed abruptly because he committed suicide, yet no one speaks of it because everyone loves reality shows because they believe everything is real.... sorry to burst the bubble, but Stallone realised the factor and drew up contracts of secrecy as well as scripts. No one is aware of the deaths as none of the reality shows can take the publicity.... Though it might have had staying power, the show was suddenly shifted to other slots, which means only one thing.... it isn't doing as well as planned but so much has been paid to produce it, everyone is stuck.

Alfonso may have been tired but it was still a good fight. I think it was a great that Joey gave the car away. It just shows how genuine some of these guys are. Sugar Ray & Sly were probably a little surprised by this but there are still good people out in this world.

Alfonso fought well, but he was TIRED after round 3. And you guys like him. Oh wow, 3 great rounds and then you're done. Not impressed at all. He won't win. You need to go all 5 rounds. Jesse all the way. He seems to be the only one with the endurance to last all 5 rounds. He was an animal is the competition. Sergio impressed me as well. Those are my final two.
