Could The Tonight Show move to NYC?

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 27th 2005 3:58PM
Conan and BloombergThat's what Mayor Bloomberg would like, and he joked about it with future Tonight Show host Conan O'Brien (he takes over the show when Leno mercifully retires in 2009). It's not up to O'Brien of course, but it's an interesting concept. The show originated from New York when Johnny Carson first hosted it in the early 60s, and it would certainly give the show an entirely different vibe. Of course, moving away from Burbank means you don't get a lot of the A-list, mainstream stars who live out there. But with Conan taking over, it's going to be a different type of show anyway, so maybe moving back is an option.

Oh yeah I'd much rather have Conan than Leno. I'd rather have Pat Sajak than Leno! Leno is just...awful, in every single way. Just terrible. Letterman wasn't as alternative as Conan is now when he went over to CBS for the 11:30 slot. You always had the sense the he could be the elder, that he could be just a little bit more mainstream for 11:30. With Conan you don't get that sense as much, but I hope it works out.

"The [Tonight] show originated from New York when Johnny Carson first hosted it in the early 60s" And the mid-60's, and the late 60's, and the early 70's. They didn't move to Burbank until 1972!

That wasn't the sentiment when the Letterman switch first happened. He was just as outragous as Conan is now if not more so. Conan has hosted award shows and can be a little tamer. A strength that nobody really talks about is Conan's interview skills I think he's the best on late night for that. Nothing can be worse that the re-tread Leno that's for sure.

I agree Joey. I like Conan too, but in small doses. He really is a personality best suited to the 12:30 spot, not the mainstream 11:30 spot. Letterman was quirky too, but you knew he switch to an 11:30 slot no problem.

Different is an understatement. I like Conan and all, but I find it hard to believe that he will be able to make the transition to prime-time (as prime-time as "late" shows get anyways). I guess he has a couple of years, but he better get started growing up and getting ready for the big leagues.
