Salem to get Bewitched statue

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 28th 2005 2:59PM

BewitchedAs someone who lives not too far from the location where the statue will stand, I can tell you that the recent news (like the article linked below) of residents being upset or unhappy about a Bewitched statue being erected in Salem, Massachusetts, home of the witch trials of the 17th century, are untrue. The key word is "some." Sure, some residents are unhappy that the city will put up a statue to commemorate such a horrible time in history (even if that's not what they are doing - Bewitched filmed several episodes in Salem and surrounding towns in 1970 and TV Land is placing the statue there "to celebrate America's favorite TV characters in places where there is a connection," says TV Land Senior VP Rob Pellizzi), but really, most people are thrilled about it, including the mayor. TV Land has also placed statues of other TV icons in appropriate cities: Mary Richards in Minneapolis, Bob Hartley in Chicago, Ralph Kramden in New York, and Andy and Opie Taylor in Raleigh, NC. The unveiling of the statue will occur around the time of the opening of the big screen Bewitched starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.
