Today's Chappelle news: in a facility?

by Bob Sassone, posted May 11th 2005 7:59PM
Dave ChappelleOK, here we go: Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Dave Chappelle has checked himself into a mental facility in South Africa. Supposedly, no one seems to know where he is, what's wrong, or what's going on, including anyone at Comedy Central. And the mag is also reporting that he has indeed filmed four or five episodes of his show (but no intro scenes) for this season, conflicting with earlier reports that said he had filmed ten episodes or maybe zero episodes. Which just confuses things more. Hopefully the guy is OK.

Man, they sure are building up this new season. Question: How many times can you say [the 'N' word] and fake smoke pot before it's just not funny anymore? I think this show has been on decline for a while. I hope all of the 'crazy' hype works--hey, it worked for Mariah...eventually.

Jesus, Seth. I didn't know that Mitch Hedburg was dead until I googled his name after your post. I was at ticketmaster.com two weeks ago looking if had any dates scheduled in New York! He may have been an semi-underground comic, but the press was still a little too hush-hush about his passing.

Seth: I was hoping Mitch Hedberg was punking us back in late March/early April but uh... he wasn't. I don't think Dave would pull an Ashton/Jamie Kennedy/Whoever. He's not white. I think they stopped advertising the third season on Comedy Central and I'm not seeing a lot of Dave in the news. It's too quiet to be a publicity stunt. I'd expect him in rehab more than a mental facility. I hope he's okay.

Does anyone else think this might be a grander, more self-aware version of Ashton Kutcher's "Punkd is over - it won't be back" act? All the conflicting reports and mysteriously missing Dave makes me think this is all a stunt.
