Here's a book I won't buy, even for a kid

Bill Rancic and his carSeason one Apprentice winner Bill Rancic is writing a children's business book. Let me repeat that with emphasis: he's writing a children's business book. It's called Beyond The Lemonade Stand: Starting Small To Make It Big. Ugh. At first I thought, "hey, that's kinda cute, kinda funny, a business book for kids." But then it hit me: kids who have lemonade stands don't do it for the business aspect of it. They aren't all little Apprentices, walking around in little Brooks Brothers suits, carrying around straws and sugar packets in their briefcases, putting up their lemonade stands on the sidewalk like it's one of those incredibly stupid Apprentice challenges. And the age group he's targeting? 8 to 12 year olds. Yeah, sounds great. Another product to make kids grow up even faster. To look at the world even more cynically, more strategically. Then again, the business advice any Apprentice could give could only be targeted for kids, so maybe he's on to something.

Another funny thing is that I sent trump and all the contestants on the apprentice a copy of my book Starting Young: Getting a jump on Getting ahead in ahead in Business during the first season. Trump sent his back un-opened, the rest including Mr. Rancic didnt.

But that's just the "there's no such thing as an unselfish act" defense. Both you and I link these posts to our blogs, and we both have advertising. Therefore I could make the case that even though we may post to add to the conversation, we're also motivated by driving traffic to our sites to see our ads. Does that de-value the original contribution?

Umm, his money may be going to charity, but he's in the press getting the limelight for another project that I doubt will feed money to a charity. Misdirected? I say, maybe, lamed out of proportion, but the sentiments are on the money.

Worth mentioning that his money from this project goes to charity. Not saying it merits doing at all, just that any "wow, what some people will do for the money" comments are misdirected.

Gordy said, "Also, can this idea be any worse then Bill O'Reilly's 'The O'Reilly Factor for Kids'?" YES! :) Any idea that drags kids away from being kids is a bad idea. I started working when I was 16 against my mom's better judgment. Now I wished I was slow and lazy like my neighbor's kid, who didn't start working until he finished 6 years of stop and go college, filling the cracks with vacations. But I wanted to be responsi-bib-le! Now don't get me wrong, kids should be aware of what adult life is all about, but not until they're done being kids. Teenagers always get the "adult" bug, and I keep telling them to just chill. It's not worth it! Adulthood comes fast enough. But unfortunately.....as I step up on my soapbox....kids want to work so they can buy everything life has to offer because most of the time parents have to work to pay the rent or mortgage and they don't have a lot left over for "all that jazz" that keeps being paraded in front of us. If it's not on TV, it's on billboards, magazines, etc. And of course there's no way to stop it because the rich kid will tell the poor kid, "Look what I got" as he/she flashes his/her whatever - as the poor kid runs home crying "I want that too!" blah

UGH!! This is ridiculous. Kids are already growing up too fast and he wants to add more competitiveness to it? He must not have kids. My son is happy just to ride his bike around our dead end court and play on his swingset. I wouldn't change it for the world. Kids need unstructured time to develop their imagination, which will help them more than any business book could ever do. I liked Bill Rancic, but this knocks his credibility down more than just a few pegs in my book.

Hey, they're about to name a new Apprentice. He's gotta do something to get his name out there, right? After all, they didn't use him at all this season. What's a 14:55 minuter to do? Also, can this idea be any worse then Bill O'Reilly's 'The O'Reilly Factor for Kids'?

HAAA! That's a scream and three quarters! What some people won't do for a dollar. It really is bad enough that kids never get to be kids these days, but this is definitely one for the 21st Century Limp of Lame! I'll be the first to glady charge this guy an exorbitant fee for his lame star - that will be placed smack-dab in the center of his foreheard. The smack-dabbing will be free of charge.
