American Idol: So damn hard to tell

Bo BiceEach week the performances vary by such enormous degrees that I'm having trouble figuring out who I like the least, or, "best." What I've realized is that while Carrie, Bo and Vonzell are all very talented individuals, they suffer simply by being on the show. When Simon chewed out the band last week, he really pointed out the biggest handicap to becoming an American Idol: if the band doesn't back you up with enthusiasm, you're lost. Which is why Bo chose to go solo on his performance of "In a Dream," although it didn't work out too well, in my opinion.

This is a tough one to call. Carrie gave me chills when she did Roy Orbison's "Crying," and she gave solid performances on Air Supply's "Making Love" and Shania Twain's "Man, I Feel Like a Woman." (By the way, was she wearing hair extensions?) But solid is as solid does: it doesn't necessarily make an Idol.

Clive DavisThe other contestants faired slightly worse, although none of the judges seemed to notice (even Simon was unusually content to fire off the compliments). Bo massacred Mick Jagger's "I Can't Get No (Satisfaction)," which really sunk me, because that's favorite of mine for karaoke. Frankly, his 'bama voice is better suited to country; his rock'n'roll persona can only take him so far.

Clive Davis as an addition to the judges table was inconsequential—the most criticism he gave was "don't smile" to Vonzell after she sung "I'll Never Love This Way Again," which, while true, really doesn't effect voting.

My biggest complaint: What the f*ck is wrong with that band? They love Carrie, they fall asleep when Vonzell sings, and they just don't know what to do with Bo.

My vote? Tonight I text'd in a vote for Carrie, because out of the three (yes yes, despite what I said last post) she's got the best chance of being an Idol on her own. The other two, while good singers, simply couldn't make it on their own. Vonzell wants to be an Aretha duplicate, and Bo wants to be something he simply can't be.

Hi idol-fans, You reality people should stop accosting all those who decide they don't wish to be pullled into a scripted dimension you believe is real life on TV. To encourage viewers, idol contestants have been interupting people on the street. Blocking peoples way with picket cards for attention. Begging people to watch their desperate 15 minutes of tv. We have our own lives, and while you may not care about others, don't expect us to grovel into your life-less universe.... get a life. Idol is all scripted, as are all the other shows people seem to think are fantastic... One contestant died on The Contender.... do you need more deaths to stop this insanity. If they already found 1 singer the first time, and now they are scraping for a second, would you not think that there is a reason why no one really cares.... And accosting people and threatening them is not the answer

Alice I guess America agreed with me. Yes I agree that Bo has a nice voice but his voice can only do one style where Carrie has done many styles. She did wonderful and America agreed. She will be a Star!!!. Go and buy American Idol Season 4 CD and maybe you will see that Carry is very talented. She does not sing sharp or flat. Once in awhile musicians will make a mistake but she does not continually sing flat or sharp. I have even heard Bo go off key. If you are not a musician than you have no right to put any singer down. It's hard to be up there and hear the band and your voice when everybody is yelling. I have seen concerts before that the lead singer went off key. So remember the pressure that was put on them. Each and every one of the Idols did a beautiful Job. I hope you are eating your words right now cause Carry is American Idol Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me, that was by far THE BEST American Idol show ever!!! They all did great. It was great to see them all again. The peformance Bo and Carrie gave together singing "Love will lift us up where we belong" was absolutely perfect. They both will sell tons of records individually, but they could probably sell one or two as a duo!

Alice, your comments are not only silly but unfounded. What you have with Bo is a good performer and not a great singer. We had that in Fantasia last year. It hasnt worked too well for her thus far. Carrie is more in the mold of Kelly Clarkson, only 90% more appealing to the male audience. To call Carrie "Plain Jane" would be equivalent to calling Donald Trump a poor bum. She may not have been blessed with incredible dance moves, but then again, singers like Reba, Martina, Faith, and countless others seem to have done quite well without it. What I would suggest to you is to visit http://www.idol-thoughts.com and listen to the mp3's of the perfomances. I think you will find that listening without watching will help you get over your obsessive love affair with Bo Bice rather quickly.

Toni, your comments are just plain silly. I hope you take your comments back after you watched the finale. Carrie looked like a very SCARED robot on the stage. She was so pitchy as she is every night. Bo is real and authentic and he knows how to speak words other than, "awesome." BO ROCKS! We don't need another plain Jane American Idol.

Come on people. Carry is the best. Listen to her she is real when she sings. She feels the music and brings that feeling out when she sings. Bo is more like a robot. He is very good but he will only do rock and roll. Carrie on the other hand can do country and pop. Never have I heard her go off. When Bo sang that country song it was not for his voice. Then is when we found out he could not sing country. When Carrie sings country or pop she rocks. I want my children to look up to somebody that is real and that can feel the music and bring that feeling threw her voice. She is Awesome!!!! Come on America vote Carrie she is the best!!!

Question to ask everyone. Is range or the way a singer make you feel inside more important? Carrie has a little more range, but leaves me cold inside. Even when she tries to put something into it, it does nothing for me. Bo has more passion with his vocals.

So you think my surprise will be that Carrie will win by more than 10%? Who knows? You could be right! His acappella peformance was a brilliant strategy move, no doubt. Just like when he picked "For the love of money" 1 week prior to the Apprentice finale. Another brilliant move! There is no doubt that Bo is the smartest of all the contestants. I will certainly give you that. But does his vocal abilities match his brilliant strategies? I say yes. He has definitely made the best out of what he has. Does his vocal abilities hold a candle to that of Miss Underwoods? Not even close.

Sorry, Mr. Jeff Coyle. You are wrong. The google search did not impress me. Were you asleep during the a cappella performance? If you are such an expert on octaves and the like, maybe you should be judging this competition. Do you live in Hollywood?? Are you a record producer? In any case, I think you will be suprised with next week's results. Oh, and please forgive me if I insulted YOUR intelligence. Go BBBBBBBO!!!! Love, Simba
