CSI: Grave Danger

The CSI crewNothing I detest more than a season finale that leaves me hanging (ahem...hello, Smallville?), but thankfully, CSI always gives good closure. It may not maintain much of a narrative arc, as other shows do (we get a few work-related crushes here and there, maybe a special two episode thriller, but that's about it) yet I appreciate that they did what they could to make this season's finale special: get a spazzed-out Tarantino to direct, put a man in a box, watch the fun begin.

The conventional CSI show has one or two "catches" meant to complicate the investigation—a bad lead, mismatched DNA, that kind of thing. Usually you can see the slips coming from (sigh) A Mile Away. What worked for this episode was that they piled on so many problems I started to worry about Stokes' fate; I had legitimate anxiety: man in box; man in box with gun and threatening taped message; idiot CSI agents keep the light on so they can watch their buddy die in real time, all the while draining down the fan battery; daughter meets with estranged father (who happens to be hobnobbing with ancient Vegas entertainers) to procure much cash; cash delivered, kidnapper blows himself up; search commences, dead dog found in a plexiglass cube; fire ants; near cardiac arrest; bomb beneath a crystal clear coffin. Whew, they didn't miss much, did they?

George Eads' portrayal of Nick Stokes was especially strong this episode, plexiglass box or no plexiglass box. Panic can be hard to replicate. Maybe Eads was channeling a bad childhood experience? I've had a soft spot for his character ever since his love affair with a hooker many episodes back.

What I didn't appreciate was the final scene where Stokes visits his kidnapper's daughter in prison and gives her the message "don't take it with you." What silliness. There is no man on earth, who, after being buried in a box and nearly chewed to death by fire ants who would either (A) look that good, or (B) be that forgiving. And I couldn't tell if that was a grin on her face or an attempt at stoicism, so there's no way to know if we were being clued in to some kind of CSI season finale/season premiere sequel.

Grave Danger was an exceptional end to what I'd have to call - not the best season! Having written half the spoilers myself I was in for many surprises as I knew about the poncho characterisation, but I thought the country western song that was repeated the whole way through was just a perfect touch, as it brought out Nick's heritage. Also the song by The Turtle's, "Outside Chance" was interesting too, although I thought the lyrics didn't quite fit, and maybe they could have done something slightly more appriopriate, (or country western!) I liked how everyone reacted in different ways to what had happened. Greg just worked evidence like he'd never done before, not asking to be the hero but to be able to have say he helped whatever the outcome. Warrick just couldn't stand it, he felt useless and so angry, Grissom kept his cool, as usual, but almost felt as though Nick was a son, as he used his entomology skills to their greatest here. Sara had a small part in this episode, but whenever she found something that might help - she was running guys! Sara running! Almost as though every second made a hell of a lotta difference! She also kept her cool in the long run, and she used her knowledge of the family history to locate Nick in the end! While Cath, played by Marg Helgenberger, who is my idol, did an outstanding job yet again. And I did see the odd deja vu between season 3 episode 4's "A Little Murder" with the throwing up cop, the working solo - thanks to Warrick! But I personally am a great supporter of the Cath and Nick relationship plan, as done in pilot, I feel it may return in the season 7 finale. And some of the things that happened in Grave Danger helped to prove that, her heart melted at seeing Nick's crime scene clothes at the crime scene, immediately noted that the cup wasn't his evidence, she completely broke down when they found the dog, and she could hardly just stand there and do nothing, watching Nick suffer when she knew she could get the money, even though she knew what she had to do to get the money! I watched it again last night, for the sake of being able to, i spent 4 hours just watching good TV repeats last night - how sad is that?! Well there are a few things I really think could improve about the episode, and I say this time and time again, but the hallucination scene - well I understand the motive, but was it really necessary? As we're just building up tension and suspense for the big find, seconds away from them finding him, and then suddenly, woh it's a hallucination - what the hell? Completely broke up the suspense which made it less special second time round! I think the alteria motive was to lead us to believe it was actually happening, but seconds into it it all became blatent as they started talking in ways they would never talk, and singing, and then he had his eyes open and it all became clear! So back to suspense at last, it's almost like, where were we? Oh yeah - keep digging guys! Almost there! I thought the charges on the box was a very clever touch way to go QT there! And the way Hodges had noticed them earlier in the episode, but no-one seemed interested, and he's just saved all their lives! Amazing, and the pain behind that for everyone as well, I thing I ddn't like though, was how they made Warrick all caring, and Cath seem like it's us or him! When she cared just as much! And the final line there from Grissom "I want my guys back" is hinting towards a better season 6, and my website can be called CSI:TheNightShift for a reason once again! The most annoying part of the episode though has definetely got to be that final scene, that frustrating, completely unnecessary scene that I absolutely hate to pieces! everytime I watch it I now tend to turn it off before getting to that scene so that I remember the ep how I should do! they should NEVER have filmed that scene, it was 100% unnecessary, completely Sympadoo! (long story)! If they hadn't played that scene, he could have spend the summer recovering, like the next 6 months, (well technically they call it 3, but it's 6 to us) having counselling, recovering in hopsital, but nooooooo, their not THAT patient, they'll give him what? a fe seconds for all that, THEN go see her in prison - ya coz thats real realistic right? Wrong! I would have liked to see Nick in a bit of counselling, or have a few scars and hard moments as it takes years, not SECONDS to recover from this sort of traumatic event! He could even get Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and have time off work - the whole thing just was not properly thought out and not logical. I see they wanted to do it so that we wern't kept in suspense, but seriously, I would rather be kept in suspense any day! And it would have kept those not so die-hard fans desperate to watch the following season! All in all it was an incredible episode and a great achievement by QT and CM!

I saw the season finale a couple of says ago and it was everything i expected. George Eads is an amazing actor and he has been given opportunity to prove that in episode after episode. I think they picked George Eads for this performance as he is the more emotional character....again proven in episodes like "Who are you?" season 1 and "Stalker" season 2. I would have preferred a slightly different ending, for example, Nick at the hospital with his parents and colleagues, before he ventured off to see the daughter of the man who kidnapped him, but after reading one of the other reviews I can now understand why that scene was put in. The performances by the other actors was brilliant, it give them an oppotunity to show a more emotional side to their characters albeit, sublety. I have been a major fan of CSI since the very beginning and so far have all episodes from Season 1 to Season 4 on DVD.... I am really looking forward to owning Season Five and can't wait until Season six starts..... What will this experience mean for George Eads character? Will he still be the same happy, trusting fellow he was before? How will the others react to him, more protective etc?????????

This episode has just been shown in the UK and it was everything it promised to be. However....I did feel though that some of the cast were out of character, Warrick particularly - I felt that showing him kicking off at the crime scene in the barn was needed to demonstrate that he loses it and doesnt usually go all girly telling Nick stories of him being making out with his girl, but another tale could have been used to demonstrate that Warrick was close to getting beaten up but didnt lose his cool (unusual) and that he kind of escaped a beating ...But the coin tossing at the end of that scene did prove to him that gambling does pay - who knows what is in store for him now? As for the last shot in the prison - this was essential to Tarantino...(I think!) Nick had been locked in a see through box and was being eaten alive by ants and he could not do anything about it. The kidnappers daughter was locked in a see through box (cell) being 'eaten alive' by the other prisoners and could do nothing about it - hence the final shot - she didnt escape and Nick did. It is also about chance - (again - re coin toss) She was at her crime scene by pure bad luck - as was nick at his crime scene. I do have big misgivings about them not checking any old cases specifically for styrofoam cups though - it is the first thing Gill would have done. unless it was to demonstrate that Gill was clouded by feelings and did not let the evidence lead him as he usually does - he is a bit more human. Trigger, Dukes of hazzard and Jack lemon (not phasing Catherine - she had other things on her mind) were pure Quentin. But did the references make an unusual day - or are we too expect the unexpected - therefore making them normal? He leaves us to decide.. Sad to say, but British TV comes nowhere near this. Well done QT and CSI!

I can't add much to the high praise for each of the actors in CSI; their work on this was top notch and they gave it their all. The overall plot, however, had more holes than your average block of Swiss cheese. My movie fan husband gets so peevish when I point out discrepancies like "But it's a different horse he's riding on this side of the ridge than the last shot..." But really. It all hinged from the very start on a string of improbabilities that the perp simply could not have predicted: one CSI investigator goes out with one cop. Nick is lured out alone because the cop is blorping up his dinner over sheep guts. The perp can easily overpower Nick (and it could have been Warrick) with an ether-soaked hankie. Uh-huh. The list goes on. It was the semi-final ending that really got me: they yanked him out of the hole in the ground in a split second without, apparently, breaking his back, simply by a one-two-three PULL! tug-o-war? Well...okay but come on! And what the hell happened to the poor bastard operating the front-end loader with the 200 pounds of dirt? "I ain't gonna do it, YOU do it!" " Naw, I ain't gonna do it, let Mikey do it, Mikey'll do anything!..." Sometimes Star Trek had more respect for the laws of physics than CSI.

I've got a different take on the final scene and it has taken me a while to figure it out. I think Nick, who has gone through a more tortuous and lethal prison than the daughter ever could, is working on not "taking it" with him and wants her to do the same. He's clearly at the edge of his emotional strength and he has to tell someone else what he's dealing with and his colleagues are too "close" for him to approach them. Like others, this should be a thread in the new season as Grissom's deafness was in the earlier episodes. In addition, I really appreciated Eric Szimada's (sp.?--sorry) performance since he had so few lines but we really felt his fear and grief through his facial expressions. If George Eads is not nominated for AND does not WIN an emmy then there is no justice in this world and that is NOT what CSI is all about. How soon does the new season start? :-(

I have to agree with Jean P who asked whose love is going to get Nick back to life ? I am eager to see what the crew will be like at the beginning of 6th season. Ill be very surprised to see Nick working as usual. When did you say the next season premiers?

I thought it was an amazing episode. George Eads' acting was phenomenal. My two favorite scenes were when they first saw him in the coffin and the looks on their faces, and then when they finally opened it up and he was so desperate to get out. I didn't like the bit with the girl in prison at the end. I agree with Holly, I was hoping after they got him out they would cut to the CSI team's reaction to finally getting him out. George deserves an Emmy for this portrayal. Complete believable that he was underground. Janice
