Koppel to read names again

by Chris Thilk, posted May 24th 2005 6:35PM

Ted Koppel will read the names of service men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the May 30th episode of Nightline. The special extended edition of the newsmagazine will air the names and faces of the over 900 soldiers killed since this time last year when Koppel aired a similar show.

You may remember that last year's broadcast, coming as it did just months before a sure-to-be tight Presidential election, garnered much criticism. Sinclair Broadcasting ordered its ABC affiliates to preempt the May 26th, 2004 Nightline. One has to wonder whether there will be as much outrage this year, when political tensions are just as high but there's no impending election?

900 dead soldiers is news no matter what your party affiliation. How can you deny that? Remembering those that gave their lives in the service of their country is the least we can do to honor them. Th isn't something to be swept under the rug.
