CBS picks up new Julia Louis-Dreyfus show

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 2nd 2005 11:01AM
Julia Louis-DreyfusWe would have told you about this a few weeks ago during upfronts, but the deal wasn't hashed out then. CBS has ordered 13 episodes of the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus show Old Christine. She plays a divorced mom. Let's hope this show does better than her NBC sitcom from a couple of years ago, Watching Ellie. Or that Michael Richards sitcom where he played a clumsy private eye. Or Jason Alexander's just-canceled Listen Up.

I thought Watching Ellie was pretty good, too. ANd I think the same for Brad Hall. He is NOT a very good writer. But I'm def. looking forward to 'Old Christine' and Julia on TV in general.

Julia's show will be a success...if her husband doesn't produce it. They are a great couple off camera, however they mix like oil and water when they work together. Remember Saturday Night Live? Go Julia! Glad to see you back on TV.

Watching Ellie was some of the best television I had seen in a long time, and I know good televsion. I like television that puts emphasis on character studies, or intellect. You have to be able to look and think beyond the obvious to gather insight into good comedy, or television for that matter. Television has more to offer than most people can appreciate. Thanks to television, my wit and vocabulary has greater style and interest.

The first 1/2 year was a realtime with a clock on the screen. The second part got rid of the clock and broke away from the formula a bit. It also featured a 1-camera look. I enjoyed the show, and Julia looked pretty hot in it too.

I actually liked Watching Ellie. What was the premise? The whole comedy is done in the style of 24, with each show taking place in real time right?

You know, I thought the first season of Watching Ellie was really good. Very original, with some genuinely funny characters and bits. I was very disappointed when the network insisted it be retooled into a more traditional sitcom--after which it totally bit (and died a quick death, unsurprisingly). I don't think Julia got enough credit when she was on Seinfeld, but she's a really, really talented comedic actress. I, for one, will be watching the new show when it debuts.

The only question is will it outlast the Paris-Paris engagement.

I'll take the under on this one. Disaster waiting to happen. Stick to Commerce Bank commercials.
