Battlestar Galactica primer, Part 3: The Cylons

by Jen Segrest, posted Jul 14th 2005 5:00PM
cylonsThere are two kinds of Cylons, one is a shiny silver a cycloptic warrior type similar to the old series, and another than looks like humans - a couple models of which are extremely hot babes. Now, there are multiple versions of these human Cylons. Each is identical (within the "model") but each seems to have a slightly individual personality.

Oh yeah and they have sex, lots of pretty nymphomaniac room rumbling sex as a manipulative tool, they are robot clone Succubi, if you will. When they have their spines glow red - that's the key the viewer has  they are Cylon.  Of course, not even some of the Cylons know they are Cylons and are programmed to behave as humans until they are turned on. One particular human pilot has been the focus of this particular plot point as her "dark side" began to appear with blackouts and suddenly appearing with explosives, she tied up the season with shooting the commander of the Galactica in the season ender.

We have discovered that Cylons have a version that looks human, both males and females. Actually they have 7 models (but the humans only know of a couple). There are multiples of each, and each's personality differs slightly from each other. There is a big question if there was a Original for each model or if they were created from scratch. They can bleed and can die, though when they do their "data" is transmitted to other of the same model. (I personally think they are human clones that have been implanted with cylon elements)

Detecting who is Cylon and who is not is not a simple process to say the least, especially when you have the Doctor (who developed the test in your back pocket and under a form of mind control/manipulation) to insure anyone you want to come up okay, does so.

I think the mystery behind the Cylons is what has made us all so intrigued with the show so quickly. We don't really know why the Cylons revolted against humans, we don't know exactly how many models of humanlike ones there are, we don't know if they can turn against their programming, we don't know if they want to merge with humans and become something else. So many aspects to explore and develop. I haven't looked forward to a series opener this much in a long time.

I like to think there are more than two types of Cylons. Remember, the raider ships are bio-mechanical beings, however rudimentary. So although you can somehow shoot it up enough that it no longer is autonomous, get inside and fly around by squeezing its spleen or whatever, its still a form of Cylon in my book. So that makes me wonder what other working-class beings the Cylons have created. Are the base stations giant, biological beings, too? Are their hand-held ray guns the equivelent of Cylon badgers? Are Cylon toilets some kind of eternally hungry, genetically-engineered waste fetishists? You decide...

Technically, there's 12 models of human-looking Cylon. We only know of a few at the moment, and more will be revealed this season. (My money's on a Gaeta model.)

The red-spine thing is a memorable visual but has some problems plot-wise. They are supposed to be so close to seeming hunman that it takes 9 hours of testing using nuclear material to tell their blood from humans. Don't the huge red LED's attached their spinal column give it away?
