TV Squad Poll: Sci-Fi face off!

by Jen Segrest, posted Aug 2nd 2005 9:15AM
My SG-1 posts get often more comments than anything else, proving again that Sci-Fi fans are rabid and intelligent in discussing their favorite shows' high and weak points, and this last review was no different. There has been much discussion in recent weeks about Ben Browder of Farscape moving to SG-1 as a regular player, and many commenters cry how much they miss his former show.

So let me ask, flat out: Would you bring back Farscape - as it was when it left the air - if you knew the only way to do so was by canceling Stargate SG-1 (as the series is right now)? Which show would you pick to live?

Stargate SG-1 or Farscape?
Stargate SG-1 hands down.
Farscape without a doubt.
I don't do Sci-Fi, you nerds!
Niether, I hate questions.
I can't decide, I want them both!

I think the point is moot. FarSacpe will never make a come back, and now that SG-01 is on the SciFi channel, it will probably be canned as well. SciFi seems to think that their viewers want idiotic things like "Tripping the Rift" other than things that are of real interest.

Stargate wins by lightyears! I never liked muppets in space! I nearly didn't watch the series, because I loved the film so much - but I have to say it is the only time IMHO that the series outdid the film. Thank you RDA for starting it all.

Farscape because while taping as I watched, I still never flip while commercials where on because I didnt want to miss a minute. I cant wait till this fall for Farscape to come out in syndication so I can experience the excitement all over again. I even looking more forward to Farscape in syndication than the season premier of Lost. I miss having intelligent science fiction to watch. Heck, I cant even find good enough science fiction to watch that keeps me from flipping in the middle of the show.

How about neither? After "Serenity" bows out of the theatre, how about SciFi approves a continuations series to start at 8pm, followed by "Doctor Who" at 9pm, and have "Battlestar Galactica" remain in the 10pm spot? That would be my line-up for SciFi Friday. That would also sew up SciFi's hit series as being in the NBC Universal/SciFi ownership camp more than the current line-up because the "Stargate" franchise is owned by MGM/Sony/etc. and only "Battlestar Galactica" is solidly under NBC Universal ownership. Any continuation of "Serenity" would be majority owned by SciFi (possibly some retaining rights held by Fox), and SciFi could easily enter into co-production deal with the BBC for "Doctor Who" in time for its Season 3 Vol. 2/Season 29 in 2007 (and in the process, they'd have 26 episodes to run by the end of 2006 comprised of 2005/2006 seasons already aired in the U.K. at that point). But then again, I'm not a SciFi Executive so common sense does not enter the equation.

Personally, I LOVE both shows and would rather see SciFi quit with all the crap movies they make or the crap shows they make. But since most of middle America has those damn Nielson ratings boxes...we'll continue to get crap shows on SciFi (and most other networks). I think that Vala has just as much depth as Aeryn, she just doesn't have an entire series to develop it. Vala will be in 6 eps, where as Aeryn had 4 series/seasons and the mini to develop. I think Claudia is doing bang-up job on showing the depth Vala has. Quit being annoyed by her behavior. ;) Why do you think she behaves that way! ;)

I would give anything to have Farscape back, but since I can't, I'm loving Ben and Claudia in SG-1. I'm looking forward to seeing Ben develop his character and seeing how Ben energizing the series as a whole. I love Atlantis and BSG. I loved Firefly, too. The Serenity movies ROCKS (saw the sneak preview) - it does not disappoint!!!! I love all sci fi - I'm easy to please - but Farscape will be hard to beat for me.

That's not why did the poll. Most of the comments actually saw the ep as I did (A little less than stellar), but we had a large amount of people still mourning farscape's premature cencellation. They were people who mostly seen both, and liked/loved Stargate well enough, but not digging the current state but loving Ben Browder mostly for his work on farscape. I was just curious when it came down to it which show they preferred, if they had to choose only one.

as someone just said very succinctly on a popular stargate forum, doesn't this fandom have enough to divide it without things like this? why is such a poll even necessary? because you don't like the feedback you're getting or because you have a problem with stargate or because you see a divide and want to take advantage of such a thing by using this poll to get more hits on this web site? really... sheesh what's next? who's hotter? or what actor is better or... good grief.

I love both shows, but toward the end of it's run, Farscape had me suspending disbelief a little too much. I'm all for plausible ways to beat the enemy, but Crighton(sp?) and crew started dispatching the bad guys against such impossible odds that even for a sci fi show I had to disbelieve. The first few seasons of Farscape, was better IMO than the first few seasons of SG1, but only by a nose.
