Joss Whedon in awe of Veronica Mars

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 12th 2005 2:56PM

Veronica MarsI've only seen about 40 seconds of Veronica Mars (I'm going to remedy that, I swear), but I just can't believe it's this good. Buffy, Angel, and Firefly creator Joss Whedon says it's...well, here are some quotes about the show from the man himself:

  • "Best. Show. Ever."
  • "I've never gotten more wrapped up in a show I wasn't making."
  • "These guys know what they are doing on a level that intimidates me."
  • "It's the Harry Potter of shows."

Wow, don't beat around the bush, do you like the show or not?

I watched the original run of VM and ended up being a wholehearted fan by mid-way through, but it's totally overrated. Since it's underwatched, fans of it go overboard w/ the praise--Joss included.

I was a latecomer to Veronica Mars and it's something that I regret enormously. I wish I had been there from the very beginning, discovering and relishing at the same time, as opposed to feasting on it in one very intense week. When I first discovered the show, it nearly pained me to say that I thought it better than Buffy, which is a show that I had long loved and worshipped. But, to me, in my very humble opinion, Veronica Mars is the better show. I still love Buffy and when it comes to allegory and metaphor, no show tops it. But when it comes to continuity and characterisation, Veronica Mars is the better and that makes me love it just a little more. In the end, though, it's like comparing Picasso and Modigliani. I love Modigliani just a wee bit more than Picasso, but I've loved Picasso longer. And he almost never fails to make an immense impression on me. So it is with both VM and Buffy. Superb tv on both accounts. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with Mr. McDuffee, who posted above that he found the show more appropriate for the under-30 crowd. I'm in my 30s and love it. Many of my lj friends, who are also in their 30s, also love it. And I've converted a number of 30+ people, including two of my best friends (professionals - in fact, academics) to the show. Even my parents enjoyed it. If my mom were at all inclined to watch tv regularly, I'm sure that VM would be on her must-see list. The show may not be for everyone, but I'd hate to see people bypass it without, at least, giving it a reasonable try.

DVD of Season 1 comes out October 11, you can already order it on amazon.com for 30% less. Season 2 starts Wednesday September 28 at 9PM, it's gonna be against Lost but if you watch Lost and VM you should either tape or download it because it doesn't need the ratings!

I'm still holding out final judgment of the show, as some of your readers have seen of me already. Though I get the feeling this show is better suited for a younger-than-early-thirties crowd, one of which I sadly don't belong to anymore. Some dialogue is witty, but not really enough. They certainly don't dumb down the show at all -- the writers assume the viewers are intelligent and don't insult that fact one bit. I'm hoping that once I sit through the rest of the 1st season and see the finale, I'll finally see why I need to watch season two.

Believe it. This show *is* that good. Joss Whedon isn't exaggerating. As much as I loved the first three seasons of Buffy, I think the first season of Veronica Mars is much better than Buffy's first season and on par - if not better -- than Buffy's second. I prefer Veronica because I never really liked the demon and vampire aspect of Buffy and it was the writing and involving ongoing stories that held my interest. But both shows are very well written with snappy dialogue and very involving. VM's plotline is also more complicated and intricate because of the way the season-long mystery plays out over all 22 episodes, all the while Veronica is solving at least one case in each episode (sometimes more).

bit torrent... i love you. for the past week i've been watching season one of this show. i missed it during its run because... i forgot what show was on the at same time, maybe Lost or Joey (hehe, jk). this season was amazing, an absolute blast. and the finale... on man! that one hour was better than 90% of those two hour, 100 million dollar action movies that come out every year. seriously, if you have bit torrent, download it!

Veronica Mars is definitely a great show that I've liked more and more each time I've seen it (and I've seen all of season 1). However, Joss is being waay too modest- Veronica Mars has yet to reach the sheer creativity and brilliance of Buffy at its best (remember Surprise/Innocence? Becoming 1&2? Once More With Feeling??) Veronica is very promising and may someday be on par with Buffy, but until then my unbridled love will be reserved strictly for the latter.

As someone who didn't start watching until reruns started, I have to agree that Veronica Mars is easily the best new show of last season and at least as good as anything else on the air right now. It merges standalone stories and a continuing arc very, very well. It a shock that it's on UPN, which isn't exactly known for engrossing drama. And what's wrong with Harry Potter? The films may be shallow children's fare, but the books continue to delight, dismay and depress me by turns. Can't wait for number seven, even if, like Buffy season seven, it means the end of the journey.

"It's the Harry Potter of Shows" meaning it's simple and written by someone else twenty years earlier. I know Joss Whedon has arrested development issues but if your not twelve or younger put the Harry Potter book down now. Great show either way.
