The Five: 5 Guilty Pleasures

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 15th 2005 9:26AM

The Brady BunchYou know the shows. The ones you're embarrassed to admit to anyone that you watch. The ones you might even be a little embarrassed to admit to yourself that you watch. Past or present. Here are mine:

  • soap operas (especially Guiding Light)
  • Fantasy Island
  • The Love Boat
  • all those blooper and practical jokes shows
  • The Brady Bunch

Friends. It's just about the only show I've ever actually watched (and then only sporadically for one or maybe two seasons) that makes me cringe completely. Well, unless you count times when I've been forced to sit through episodes of Charmed that my girlfried was watching... or embarassment at dating someone who watches Charmed.

No particular order... - HD to the MAX (I love IMAX films, but they just don't look the same in cable-fed SD - sigh) - According to Jim - MadTV - The Apprentice - Rock Star: INXS (Nobody likes it? Seriously? Everyone I know watches it!)

My 5 Guiltiest TV Pleasures (in Letterman/Casem Order) 5. Battlebots & Robot Wars (where did all the fighting robots go?) 4. Shows Hosted by Tom Bergeron (he makes me laugh, I can't figure out why to save my life) 3. Mucha Lucha! (especially strange since I HATE WWE-style wrestling) 2. Ground Force (BBC's bickering Charlie & Tommy & Alan Titchmarch will always be the best makeover show team ever) 1. MadTV (current top choice for cheap laughs, followed by 'Blue Collar' and 'Whose Line Is It Anyway') Of course, I recently wrote for MSNBC.com's annual "Guilty Pleasures" feature, but not in the TV category; still, here's a link: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8633936/

The only show I occasionally watch that I truly feel guilty about is Cops. The whole idea of that show and its exploitation of people goes against everything I stand for, and yet I find myself hopelessly drawn to it at times. I'm a horrible, horrible person.

Terrible, late-night syndicated shows: VIP. Viper (I used to stay up late to watch Viper. That's hours of sleep time I'll never get back). Dark Shadows. The Nanny. COPS.

1. Melrose Place, but only when it was on E!. I never watched it when it was originally broadcast. 2. Punk'd. I don't like to talk about it. 3. Laguna Beach. Damn good cheese. 4. The Apprentice. I know that I hate this show but watching these people self-destruct is a lot of fun. 5. The occasional night of Everwood or One Tree Hill.

1. Dr. Phil - I just can't get enough of his straight talk! 2. Dawson's Creek 3. Dharma and Greg - But if I hear my roommate on the stairs, I immediately change the channel 4. Divorce Court 5. Early Edition - you know, the show about the guy who gets the newspaper a day early and find himself reluctantly solving crime? And he's got a blind black lady friend? And a mystical cat? It used to be on all the time late at night when I was living in Chicago, and I got hooked (incidentally, it usually preceded Nash Bridges, which would probably be #6 on this list)
