Veronica Mars, season one comments: Part Three

veronica mars clash of the tritonsOK, I'll admit it, this show is addictive. Having been watching many of these episodes back-to-back over the past few weeks, I can see how the writing and acting improved over time, which makes me excited to finish the season off before the next one starts. Hey, if Joss says this show is the "Best. Show. Ever," how can anyone go wrong?

11. Silence of the Lamb - So far I'd have to say this was probably the most emotional episode of the season, but then again I'm not finished watching them all yet. Like others commented last time, this episode does not really continue where we leave off in the previous, cliffhangery episode, but it doesn't really matter. Veronica's friend Mac seems sort-of like the Willow to Veronica's Buffy, if you want to make those sort of associations. The scenes with Mac and her 'other' family members are very powerful and rarely matched in other shows of this type on television.

Quote of the episode:
Lamb: Strapping on a guitar. Does it get rid of feelings of inadequacy?

Gabe: Does strapping on a gun?

12. Clash of the Tritons - Do secret societies like the Tritons really exist in high schools? Anyway, a few juicy tidbits are revealed in this episode, including a very distant foreshadowing of Logan's feelings for Veronica. we even get a little musical number thrown in for good measure. Strangely we never do see what happened to Logan's father after the stabbing. He seems just fine, though word has suddenly spreak through the school about it and his affair(s). We're left with a somewhat shocking ending to this episode, one that gets covered in the next two.

Quote of the episode:
Veronica: Hi, everybody! Say "repressed homosexuality!"

13. Lord of the Bling - Logan's warming up to Veronica a bit more as he asks for her help. The awesome Anthony Anderson makes an apearance as Bone Hamilton, who hires Keith to find his missing daughter. We see quite a bit of flash-backing to the old Lily days, her reason for breaking up with Logan, which lead to his dislike of Veronica.

Quote of the episode:
Veronica: We used to be friends. A long time ago.

14. Mars vs. Mars - The title of this episode refers to a case that both Veronica and Keith are working on, though for opposite sides. The "mini mystery" in this episode came to a great, though a bit disturbing, conclusion. A shocking discovery is made by Veronica regarding Lily's confessed killer, and her confrontation with him is classic.

Quote of the episode:
Weevil: If you're looking for my trophy, it's back by auto shop.
Veronica: Lube job? Or, can you medal in stealing hub caps?
Weevil: Is this 1970? Rims baby.
Veronica: So you got a trophy for a rim job?

15. Ruskie Business - Oh dear lord, this episode made me feel old. An 80's-themed dance at Neptune High. Who was it that said this show is just fine for those in their 30's? Just kidding. Finally the mystery regarding Logan's mom is revealed, which leads to a lot more of Logan warming up to Veronica. We also see that Veronica clearly still has feelings for Duncan, though she gets a new squeeze pretty quickly post-tears. And as if the comparisons of this show with Buffy weren't enough, Alyson Hannigan makes an appearance as Logan's sister. Cool!

Quote of the episode:
Keith: Don't forget. You're a high school girl. Do some high school girl things now and then.
Veronica: Relax, Dad. I'm cutting pictures of Ashton out of Teen People as we speak.

"OK, I'll admit it, this show is addictive." Wait until you get to the last five, particularly the last two. They will blow you away. This show rocks, but it is a roller coaster of pain and emotion. I love it!

Jort -- Beg to differ. She said "medal" as in "medaling in gymnastics" in the olympics. She was talking about a trophy case, afterall. Nice try, though :)

I'm not sure I agree that the writing and acting improved over time, because I thought it was pretty good to begin with, but there's no doubt the suspense and the pacing picks up as the season progresses. Just wait until the last five episodes. As the previous comment said, if you thought "Silence of the Lamb" was emotional, you ain't seen nothin' yet. As Joss Whedon said, this show knows PAIN.

"Weevil: If you're looking for my trophy, it's back by auto shop. Veronica: Lube job? Or, can you medal in stealing hub caps?" Meddle, the word is meddle. still, excellent quote.
