Oh oh: Oprah's angry!

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 26th 2005 5:45PM

First she was furious for being snubbed, now she's furious for being accused of gross snubbery. It seems Oprah is angry a lot these days. The most recent flak was caused when a columnist for a black paper in Chicago questioned Winfrey's absence at the funeral of black businessman John H. Johnson, founder of the magazines Ebony and Jet. Oprah says she was in Hawaii when she got the news of Johnson's death, and could not return for the funeral. She plans to do a show about the media pioneer after the summer hiatus.

Oprah is behaving according to the conditions. If the conditions are good she would be happy if not she become angry. So now the time is very bad for Oprah.

I think the bigger assumption was that because, like Winfrey, Johnson lived in Chicago, and the funeral was held there, that she would have gone. Couple that with Johnson pioneering the way for minority-owned publishers and broadcasters, for people just like Oprah who ultimately followed him, and I think many thought her non-appearance was a deliberate snub instead of an unfortunate schedule conflict. What I thought of, though, was Winfrey's alleged "snub" by Hermes in Paris a few months ago. The retailer said that it was after hours, they were preparing for a private event, and they couldn't accomodate her, but Winfrey thought differently. It seems an interesting turnabout for her to now be accused of an insensitive act when it was probably just something that was innocent and unavoidable.

Just because she's black doesn't mean she has to go back for the funeral of someone else who is. On the other hand, Oprah is rich enough to afford to develop Star Trek transporter technology, so she probably could have been there.
