So, what would it sound like if Richard Thompson sang "Oops, I Did It Again"?

Britney SpearsI've had a theory for years, that even the most silly, banal pop songs can have new gravitas or integrity if they are performed with just an acoustic guitar. If you like Richard Thompson but hate Britney Spears, or even if for some bizarre reason you hate Richard Thompson and love Britney Spears, this is a must-hear: the music legend (I'm talking about Thompson, folks) performing Spears' hit on NPR. Ha!

He also gives his rendition of Squeeze's "Tempted," "Shenandoah," and other songs too.

Or more importantly, a bad artist could even ruin 'My Little Sunshine", if they tried hard enough.

Actually, what it proves is that so many of the artists that have some sort of artistic credibility actually write songs that hew pretty closely in structure and songcraft to the supposedly so-much-more banal and simplistic stuff of what's in the charts.

Hey, Richard Thompson deserves some of your money! Go here: http://www.richardthompson-music.com/Merch.asp and you can buy a copy of the "1000 Years of Popular Music" CD which includes "Oops!" and "Tempted".

Okay, that actually changed my view of the song. Not bad. Worthy download.
