The Five: The 5 Most Overrated TV Shows Of All-Time

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 30th 2005 2:22PM

Here's an argument starter: what five shows in the history of television do you think are just overrated? The ones that everyone goes ga-ga over but just leave you cold? Here are mine:

  • NYPD Blue
  • CSI
  • Frasier
  • Ally McBeal
  • American Idol

"How do people even consider "Buffy?"" - Very simply, it's an OVERRATED rip-off of a cheesy movie. "If anything it's underrated considering that it's always getting overlooked by more mainstream audiences for its sci-fi/fantasy element and even for its title, "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer"." - The reason it's overlooked by the "mainstream" is because people ARE sick of hearing about it by you SCIFI chicken-littles. That still makes it OVERrated not underrated. "i mean, for christ's sake, salon even had an annual award for awhile given to what they felt was the most under appreciated shows on television... NAMED "The Buffy."" - Salon is a REPUBLICAN SPIN WEBSITE - not exactly credible or tasteful.

Cheap special effects, REALLY BAD makeup jobs, and horrendous acting from EVERYONE besides the lead character does NOT make a show good. If "Buffy" or "Angel" would have been on the CW now, they would've been cancelled within the first year. The CW doesn't pad ratings, the WB clearly did and that's one main reason that the network was a failure, that and the trash like "Buffy" that cost more money to make than it made from it.

For me my five overrated tv shows are:
1. The Honeymooners, with Jackie Gleason yelling everybody for laughs.
2. Gilligan's Island, with the dumb and silly humor.
3. Fantasy Island, dumb.
4. M.A.S.H.
5. Hogan's Heroes, if World War II was like that, Hitler would have committed suicide before starting it!

1. Friends (I don't think I ever had a genuine laugh ever watching that show, I could never get through an entire episode, it was so dull) 2. Any of the CSI shows 3. the Office (US) -- it's too bad, it's got potential, but it just isn't as funny as it should be 4. Desperate Housewives (tries too hard to be witty, campy and clever and fails miserably) 5. Buffy -- I agree that will get me in trouble, but I never got the appeal of this one either

1. Family Guy 2. South Park 3. Buffy 4. Six Feet Under 5. Trailer Park Boys All of these were described to me as "genius" at some point, and all of them had something decent surrounded by garbage, making them unwatchable. Family Guy - Funny spots, couldn't possibly care less what happened to characters. Pop culture references are forced, and haven't been funny since the one of Peter watching Philadelphia. South Park - Again, I like Parker/Stone, but watching this with other people is impossible. Every crappy sex/bathroom joke gets huge laughs. Buffy - I want to chalk this up to television in general, as it just went on too long. It needed to really have an ending, or at least a plan to eventually end. Six Feet Under - So smug I almost gagged, you could just see the writers patting each other on the back as they watched it, unfortunately it made me want to gouge my eyes out. Trailer Park Boys - Marijuana. Real funny guys, keep up the good work.

I would agree on M*A*S*H, but only AFTER the third or fourth season. The first three seasons were brilliant, I think. Friends is another "season-based" example. The middle three seasons were actually funny. The rest of it was over-rated. Sex & the City: stale sex jokes/situations, narrated by a person with the most annoying voice on the planet (poor Matthew Broderick). ER: what's the fuss... it's St. Elswhere with nicer-looking cast. The Sopranos: see "Sex & the City"- stale, overdone, cliched-- plus, it's another insult to Italian-Americans everywhere. Deadwood: it's a western on HBO, so they can curse. That's about all that is going on there. Law & Order: self-important, preachy drivel. NYPD Blue: use jiggly, off-frame, hand-held camera shots and presto: you have television that appears more interesting and well-acted than it actually is. What a scam. People who listed "The O.C." take TV way too seriously.
