Muppets return to TV next year (maybe)

by Adam Finley, posted Sep 16th 2005 11:20AM
However, don't get too excited, because they're not bringing back The Muppet Show. Instead, the six-episode series, America's Next Muppet will spoof American Idol as a slew of new Muppets audition for mainstays like Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, and Miss Piggy for a chance to be on the show. The series is tentative at this point, but if ABC does decide to air it, look for it around Spring or Summer of 2006. Scuttlebutt also has it that if the show finds an audience, it may entice executives to bring back another fulltime Muppet series.

Well, hate to tell you fellow Muppet-fans... I've got some news about the Muppet Holding Co., the part of the Walt Disney Co. that controls the Muppets. As of a few weeks ago, all the Muppet's new projects, including the America's Next Muppet Mini-series are on hold. The new head of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger not only put the projects on hold, but reduced the staff of Muppet Holding Co. in half. Still not sure if this is a re-organizational move or something else. Now that I think about it, the plans they originaly had to reintroduce Kermit and Co. to the public did seem way to slow, spread out over several years in fact, when they showed them to some of us Disney Cast Memebers in July this year. Those of us that work at Jim Henson's Muppet*vision 3D @ DCA in Anaheim hear all the time from our guests that the public really wants to see more of the Muppets now, not two or three or even four years from now! heard the story from official sources as well.

ABC has to do this!!! Could you imagine Statler and Waldorf ripping on the Muppet contestants? This country needs to laugh and who better to get us and our children laughing than The Muppets.

I wish they'd bring back Muppets Tonight. It was an updated version of The Muppet Show that came out in 1995. Sadly it only lasted a short time. But I loved it so much as I loved the original. I really wish it had lasted. If they really did re-remake the show, I'd watch it. I love the Muppets.
