Lost: Man of Science, Man of Faith

by Keith McDuffee, posted Sep 21st 2005 11:28PM
lost man of science man of faithIf you read my special Spoilers Anonymous last week, you already know now that the leaked episode rundown was indeed accurate. I did read what was posted, and you know what? It really didn't ruin a thing for me. I was still held in suspense and shocked that what I read was the real deal, finally revealing what's down in that hatch. And like many other reveals with this show, one door is opened only to present us with a whole room full of more doors, metaphorically speaking.

lost man of science man of faithDid anyone have their closed-captioning on to catch what Walt was whispering in the woods? I rewound my Tivo several times to try to make out what he says, and I can't make much sense of it. But that may just be the point. I think his appearance in the woods really just showed more of his strange "powers," and wasn't really him standing there. And why didn't Sayid back up Shannon hearing the voices in the woods? Helloooo... you heard the voices in the woods last season, dude.

The writers already seem to have stepped things up a notch with the backstories of the characters. We see how Jack's past works in with how he's behaving on the island, and of course there are always plenty of "numbers" tidbits to follow (though admittedly, I didn't watch for them this time).

And of course, the reveal in the hatch. Holy crap! How the hell are they going to explain the huge coincidence that Jack actually knows Desmond? It's either a huge coincidence or he's actually been following him all this time, part of some greater master plan for the plane to go down right there on the spot. Anyone catch the old Apple ][e computer sitting down there, or am I just that much more of a geek than the rest of you?

I can not wait to see how this plays out. I love having a show on again where I simply can't wait to see what happens next. That's the new fall season for you. Oh God, am I in trouble when Veronica Mars starts up next week. Thank God for my dueling Tivos.

I don't think that the computer in the bunker is an Apple II. Instead seems like a TRS Tandy Radio Shack 80-I.

I'm thinking that the shots Desmond was taking staved off the "Black Sickness" that Rousseau warned against in the first episode. Everyday he wakes up, is forced to type something into the Apple ][ or something bad will happen (that's why he was warned against touching the button), then takes he medication to keep himself healthy. I'm wondering if Walt and Desmond are connected more so than at first glance. Where they both have powers, where Desmond has never truely left the hatch but has been projecting himself (like Walt) to get the Survivors to the island. Anyone agree?

this "theory" is all over the boards at ABC too. it's bull. i think its a red herring planted by the writers to keep us looking in the wrong places. on oceanic815.com theres an unused script page you can find that has jack coming face to face with "himself". more planted material to support this theory? hey, it isn't a bad one, from a fictional plot device standpoint. lost's rambaldi device? the same thing happened last season with the oceanicair.com site, where you could find a script page with the monster almost described in it. i think that was to throw us off too. i think we know there's no "monster" at this point. or not.

I'd believe that story about "Marseille Rousseau" if I could find one blessed thing about him or "genetic mirror" on the intarweb, but I can't. Who figured out this information and where is it? Cool idea, though.

I didn't come up with this one, but i thought I would share. I recently found an interesting natuarlly occuring thoery found in our world that states everyone has a mirror image somewhere in the world. You may have heard of this. Its called Roussau's genetic mirror theory, and I must say it is very interesting. Roussau's genetic mirror theory says that everyone in the world has an exact twin somewhere, however according to the theory you never encounter this person, by laws of probablitly and other natuaral occuring phemnomen. Its the theory that was devised by a French Mathematician named Marseille Roussau in the year 1988. He used a series of numbers to explain his theory. Now I know you're not going to believe this but here goes. 4 8 15 16 23 42 Let me explain... The 4 stands for 4 degrees of separation (not 6 or 7 as commonly stated.) Roussau believed that everyone in the world was connected by four different people. So in theory could meet yourself by using four different people connected to you. Example: Your brother's, boss's, neighbor nephew, knows your mirror. Hard to believe, I know but keep reading. The 8 stands for the eight continent, or the only place in the world where you could meet your mirror. He calculated it to be somewhere in the south pacific. Now we know its not actually as large as the other contintents but its used figurtively because everyone in all 7 continents could meet there mirror on the 8th universal continent. The 15 stands for the chances of you acually meeting yourself on this place, as in 15 out of 4,815,162,342. Look at the second set "815." Ring any bells? Interesting huh? The 16 stands for the maximum amount of people that could encounter thier twin all at the same time. Think about the number of main characters. The 23 is the number of years apart your twin and yourself are. You are not the same age as your twin. By chance and probablity it takes 23 years exactly for the same genes that made you to be connected again to form another you. The 42 stands for the maximimum number of years your twin and yourself can be alive at the same time. However people do die at diffferent times so thats why everyone isn't dead at 75. For example my twin was born on Sept. 6 2003 b/c i was born on Spet. 6 1980. Now that doesn't mean i will die in the year 2045, I could, but its not set in stone. My twin could die when he is 16, and then the whole thing starts over again. This is all very complicated and I don't know how well I explained it but the connections with the show are too coinidental to not be real. Roussau and his team (wife, included) went to the 8th continent. You can figure out how they died and why by the numbers and equations. It also fits with every character. You can predict when they will die. There are others on the island who are twins of the survivors, but have been there 23 years longer. There is a book Roussau wrote 16 years ago in 1988 when he came up with the theory.

Ok, my two cents: I'm thinking - top of my head - that Desmond has, at various points in the past couple of years, met every one of the survivors of flight 815. Maybe he met Jack eight years ago, maybe he met Locke two weeks before the flight - it'd be different for each person. I'm also thinking that he says something prophetic ("You have to lift her up") to each person that will come into play at some point, once they're on the island. It's like he's setting up a chess board with all the pieces. Just a random thought.

The guy in the SUV whose name was Rutheford -- I believe that is also Shannon's last name. Her father, maybe?

TVSquad - you can print your "Quote of the Week" now with only one candidate - KATE: What should I say if I want you to stop? LOCKE: Stop. I don't remember the exact words, but it was something like that. Priceless.
