Rock Star: INXS: Finale

by Deidre Woollard, posted Sep 21st 2005 1:56AM
j.d.The first part of this show was packed with filler all leading us to one question, who is right for this band out of our three remaining choices: theater god Mig, angsty Elvis impersonator J.D. or the intense and screamy Marty. Mig sings "Bohemian Rhapsody"  which seems an odd choice for someone trying to outrun his Queen past. His performance has a very stage show feel to it. J.D. sings "You Can't Always Get What You Want." It's pretty amazing to look at his earlier performances and realizes how much he has learned to control himself over the last few weeks. Marty does "Wish You Were Here" again even though we recently saw him do this song. Marty seems eager to prove he's not the screamer anymore. The band decides and sends Mig home (so much for the migspiracy theory).

Next the band gets up on stage to play with Marty and J.D. Marty sings "Don't Change" and although I love the way the boy looks he keeps enunciating strangely and his voice just has this fragility to it. Also he can't help himself from going mad conductor in the end. J.D. sings "What You Need" and his impersonator chops help him sound much more like Michael Hutchence than Marty does. The band chooses J.D. after making him wait for a few moments in which he nearly wets himself. He's so genuinely happy that it's hard not to be happy for him as he collaspes on the ground and weeps. Marty, for his part, is gracious in defeat and the newly reformed INXS takes the stage for the first time. I'm still not sure I'm interested in seeing or listening to the reformed INXS but at least the person who wanted the job the most got it.

I was gutted when Marty didn't win, but I understand why INXS picked JD, after he sang the song with the band, he sure did sound like Michael Hutchence. Was a fan of band when i was a teen, but not inclined to buy their new album with JD in it. Definitely looking forward to seeing more of Marty in whatever he does. He's very talented and has a great future in front of him.

JD is certainly the man! Although I started watching RockStar INXS, 6 weeks in, it became quite apparent to me after watching JD perform that he was the man for the job. He channels passion and emotion when he performs, has the rockstar presence and is HOT to boot...plus, the dude already knows all the words to the INXS songs as he was the only real die hard INXS fan out of the lot of them to begin with. I loved Marty too though. The guy, though 'mad conductorish'has talent. While some gave off an 'American Idolish' vibe when performing, Marty always seemed like the real deal when performing. Even Dave Navarro commented one time 'you already are a rock star!'. As for Mig - how he made it into the finals and what INXS ever saw in him I'll never know. Suzie should've been in the finals, NOT MIG!!!! My hunch is that the entire Philippine nation was voting for him so that kept him on top. I can tell that Mig is a beautiful person, kind and generous but his vocal pipes just don't seem strong. Is it just me or does his voice sound high and nasally?! Also, for a theatre actor, I found he lacked real stage presence. Hmmmm...I just don't know how the Migster managed to stay till the end but I'm certainly glad INXS didn't pick him! Oh and for the record, Suzie KICKS ASS!

Good luck to JD Fortune and Inxs! Out of that whole bag, he was the man for the job ... no doubt. I saw him on the Late Late show and certainly made me feel like he was part of the band. Marty certainly rocked, and is an awesome performer, but perhaps wasn't right for INXS. As for Mig? Total theatre priss with a nasal high pitched voice, no intensity, and no stage presence. How could've anyone liked him for INXS? Suzie blew him away with her cover of Queen. Mig was like Donnie Osmond trying to rock ... certainly not a match for INXS. I was so relieved to see him get the boot early on in the finale. I've been an INXS fan since the early 80's, and the band will surely never be the same without Michael Hutchence. However, you have to admire this plot to get them back on the scene. Once again, good luck to JD and the band.

I was exstatic when INXS chose J.D. The guy is hot, a potential rock god with a killer voice( and body). J.D looks and sound right for INXS, who cares how his personality was portrayed on T.V? He was the only one playing the game and he won it. So what. I cant wait to see INXS when they grace Australia's shores for their world tour!

Ok people so INXS chose J.D. for the front man.No matter what anyone else thinks they must have seen something that was not obvious to us,thats the way it goes in the world of entertainment. I myself was hoping Mig would get the job because of his talent etc.....My advise is that if you enjoyed INXS before at least give the new version a chance before condeming them. Brenda

I began watching Rockstar INXS even though I really don't like or watch Reality TV, but I became hooked nevertheless even though I agree that INXS is a tired old band that noone really cares about anymore. I listened to them as a teen in the 80's, but had no interest after that. I felt Marty Casey was a perfect fit for the band though with his moderen (alternative) sounding voice! I was disappointed when J.D. won. Over the weeks that the show aired I was sure the "Elvis" Impersonator couldn't possibly win. I really don't know what they were thinking! I would have bought their future albums if they had picked Marty, but now I will never buy an INXS album! In reading some of the other comments posted here, I am starting to agree that Marty was the true winner and the true Rockstar. He is better off that he didn't win, who would want to be the lead for a washed up band anyway! Good luck Marty! I will be looking for Marty's upcoming albums as I know he will be a big hit!

Dolly, the Drum tracks can stay because they are non-melodic. They must replace the other tracks because they ARE melodic. But you're right, Marty for example sang better in the female key in the studio, and Deanna may have sung better in a male (lower) key - who knows? Best to you! (P.S. I can't say who I am, but I've been in the industry since 1988...)

One more thing...so what you are saying, Denty, is INXS can keep their drum tracks for any singer. Okay, that's cool. But what about that dynamite guitar part? Base part? Organ? Piano? Whatever. The drums are just one element of the music and not the entire track. So what have they been doing all summer? Recording just drums? Dolly

Denty, This is a great response and I HOPE it's true. But who are you and how do you know this? And two different keys might not have covered all the bases. For instance, Deanna would not have sung in the same range that Susie would have sung. And J.D. would not have sung in the same range as Marty, for example. Different voices with different vocal ranges. Dolly

For "Dolly": INXS recorded each song in two keys - a male key and a female key. So, for example, since J.D. won, he will sing each song in a lower register, but Susie had won, she would have sung each song in the higher register. It would simply been a matter of copy the drums to another protools track and re-do the backing music in the different key. They're clever these boys - covering their A**!!
