The Apprentice: Martha Stewart: Episode 1

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 21st 2005 9:19PM

The Apprentice castThe moral of episode one? Don't ask to eat a banana before reading a children's book.

I'm hooked on this show already. And is it just me or does Martha Stewart seem like a more - yup, and I mean this - human person than The Donald? Sure, that opening walk-thru of her offices seemed as phony as could be - "hi Martha!" - but that's something you're going to get in any reality show. She just seems more real. And boy, does she have better taste.

Martha's two assistants are her daughter Alexis - no nepotism there - and Charles, who likes to hold a cigar (a cigar also figured prominently in another season opener tonight, Still Standing). Everything about this show is different, from the theme song to the look of the offices and living quarters to the host herself and how she interacts with Martha. I'd eat or craft something with Martha anytime.

Martha sends her first note about the first challenge. Is that really her signature at the bottom? It looks like the signature of that guy who had the really shaky scrawl at the bottom of the Declaration of Independence. I hope it was just a fake signature.

The teams meet with Martha and reveal their names. The "creative" team goes with Matchstick, which I like and so does Martha (she can picture the logo). The "business" team goes with Primarius, which is...well, it's stupid. Sounds like the car they might win in one of the challenges.

The first challenge: create a children's book based on a classic children's story.

Bethenny (or was it Dawn - can't remember) is chosen to read the finished story for her team, but asks to eat a banana first. The team practically freaks out on her. She only wanted to take 20 seconds to eat a banana and they freak out? Jeff is particularly despicable. He belittles and arrogantly dismisses her in front of everyone, trying to be so outrageously controlling it's laughable.

And this is one of the many things that I hate about The Apprentice (both this one and Trump's): the people they get for them seem like they were created in some Business 101 Factory. It's like they all read the same lame business books and spout the same lines, same attitude, even the same wardrobe. They don't even seem like they'd fit in anyplace in Martha's world.

Both books go off very well with the kids (side note: if Random House has the resources to put together two nicely illustrated book's in a week, I'd like someone from the company to give me a call. Thanks). I'm not even quite sure which will win. I think it was pretty much a tie.

And so do the Random House people, though they ultimately go with Primarius. The team has dinner (made by a top chef) with Martha, and as they have dinner (like in all of Burnett's shows) we show the other team talking and plotting or scheming. It seems fairly obvious that either Dawn or Jeff is going to go (with Jim as a long shot).

The team meets in the boardroom with Martha and Alexis and Charles and argue about who did what and who didn't do what. Many people pick on Dawn. Project manager Jeff picks Dawn and Jim to go into the boardroom with him (no surprise there).

Jim and Dawn go up against Jeff, saying that everything Martha didn't like about the book was Jeff's fault. Martha agrees, saying he didn't connect with the kids and didn't even connect with his teammates. She votes him out.

AND HERE'S MARTHA'S CATCH PHRASE: "You just don't fit in."

Ha!

Charles was right. This was the right decision. If Jeff hadn't been voted off, I don't think I could have watched it next week. I really liked Martha's hand written note to Jeff at the end, explaining why she voted her off. That's a great Martha touch. This is her show all the way. And that's a good thing.

Personally, I like her notes. What can I say, Martha's a genius?! The 1st episode; however, was rather bland. The task should have been more complex and related to Martha's everyday tasks such as baking an elaborate cake. While, book publishing is a portion of Martha's business, I think it would have been more appropriate to start off by having the contestants bake an incrediblly elaborate cake.

I thought Martha Stewart's "Apprentice" did credit to Martha. She was herself on the show -- tough but "cordial." I actually thought "you just don't fit in" was a lot harsher than a simple "you're fired," but the note brilliantly tempered that line. I did have one grievance, though. None of the contestants were introduced properly. I think NBC should have given this premier a 1 1/2 - 2 hour special so the audience could have gotten a chance to get a better idea of what the show is about and who the people in the show are.

Oops - I admit I was wrong. Primarius did win the first round. Sorry about that!

You were wrong stating that Primarius won the first round. I believe it was the creative team of Matchstick that won the first challenge of the children's story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

I think that's exactly who Martha is, and it's hard to say who she'd want at this early stage. I caught the last half of the show and I liked it. I found Jim to be the most entertaining, and actually for the first time in any of the shows with Trump showed some forsight for strategy. Burnett stucked to his, if it's not broke don't fix it strategy. This allows the show to play out pretty much the same as the Trump version - with some slightly altered visuals. But the similarities are even down to shown the receptionist at the same times as the Trump version. Martha seemed a little flustered with the whole thing, but i'm sure that will improved as the weeks go by.

Oh that Jim guy needs to go. He thinks he's on the other Apprentice show. With all the faces he pulls, and the comments like "You don't control my actions, I control your actions!" He's already bugging me, I was willing to tolerate Jeff for another week (although "I'm going to take a shower now, you're welcome to join me" was grounds for firing right there). I think that all the contestants are going to have to realize that the winner of Martha's apprentice is not going to be one of the bloodthirsty kill-your-competitors people. Maybe that's the way she is in real life, but I'm sure that's not the image she wants to portray on tv. She's going to lean towards the kindler gentler ones that can still get the job done without being blatantly offensive like Jim will ultimately be.

Martha was wooden and doesn't carry the requisite drama for the show. It was so phony that all her staff greeted her. She's trying to give a likeable appearance, because she knows half the world has heard she's a royal bitch. "You don't fit in"?!? What a terrible tag line! And the hand-written note was silly. I'm waiting for her to hug someone when they start to tear up, cuz it's been a "stwessful day." I'll give it one more episode, because the applicants are pretty interesting, but shy of some miracle, I'm cancelling my season pass. Thumbs down!

Martha's entire "Apprentice" show is a bit puzzling. Did anyone notice the MSO camera shot at the beginning of the show of Martha attending the Awards show in New York City with Charles Simonyi and Edd Townsend by her side? Both of her boyfriends were dressed to the nines in their tuxedos while Martha seemed to coax the news media to be sure to get plenty of photos of "my guys". This only proves that Simonyi did if fact leak a story to the Globe tabloid. Why would Martha allow this clip to be included at the beginning of "The Apprentice: Martha Stewart" if it were not true? Click --> http://www.eddtownsend.com/Globe-leak905.html There is a lot of fishy stuff going on here, plus every minute of the filming of this show contains too much phony junk. Sorry, but I have to give Martha's show two thumbs down. Too many Martha fans are disappointed that she hasn't already married Townsend in the first place. Check it out: http://www.savemartha.com/domesticagenda.html Also, I agree with Will Koffel above; good thing there's plenty else to watch this fall!

Ha, maybe couldn't have "less" grammar....I obviously meant that I couldn't disagree "more" with the review, per my subsequent comments! :)
