Watercooler Talk: Lost: Is it all in the numbers?

by Jen Segrest, posted Sep 23rd 2005 12:58PM
One interesting (9/21/2005) blog entry attempts to explain "the numbers" as Lost fans call them.

The blog gives credit to a French man named Rousseau who they say wrote an actual book on something called "Genetic Mirror Theory" before he vanished with his wife in the south pacific trying to prove it 16 years ago.  It's all very complicated, but Lost fans will eat it up.

All the numbers are totally there and it all makes a bit too much sense, if you know what I mean. The writer claims to have found Rousseau's work online but a run on Google proves that is only found on this blog - so where did they "find" it online as they claim?

Being that the Lost producers seem to like to plant stuff online on odd network-run websites to drive us insane with tons of secret doohickies hidden within. There might be something to it since, after the number's theory text, there is a link and a code word to enter in a certain spot at the official Lost site. Your prize is that you'll get to see a "lost" Lost script page they never shot that just seems to coordinate with the Frenchman's theory. (Or they put this stuff out there to throw us off the scent.)

That theory creep you out yet? No? Maybe this audio clue from Walt will do it. No? Dang, that's pretty darn freaky. Did you see Locke in the hospital ER? I think his car was the one that hit Jack's eventual finacee, and it was him on the other table in the room. So, if that's right it's probably how he got paralyzed. Man they love to torture us.

Then there's "the numbers" appearing as some kind of reference code (CR 4-81516-23 42) on the bottles of injections "Desmond" gave himself. And they show up again randomly in the mural in the hatch's hallway. Rumor is if you freeze frame the mural you'll find lots more clues than that. I did go back and frame-by-frame it but I didn't see anything more that cryptic arrows and the word "sick".

And how about that hatch, eh? Who knew it was a hipster batchelor pad without the dames, not me! Think that other bunk was Ethan's? I do. I'm really only sure of two things, it's been there far longer than Desmond has been, and the circa 1970's computer I'm pretty sure is a morning "Nope, not dead yet" check-in. Or not, who the hell knows. All this stuff coudl be a smokescreen for something much more mundane. I'm not even sure the writer knows for sure, but it is a fun ride.

This just jumped out at me from Lacy's post... Desmond said he was training for a race around the world. Looking at those words more closely... perhaps by race he doesnt mean a 'start to finish' type of race but more of a new race of human beings? And 'around the world' means, on the other side of the planet, say... somewhere near Australia? Just a thought.

And another thing; Why is it the others only turned up 40-odd days later when the french woman lit the fire to make black smoke. Has anyone ever seen a plane crash without a huge amount of black smoke billowing out of it? How come they waited so long?

You know what, I'd like to know why we never see any of the cast shaving, washing their clothes or getting their hair cut. Yet the men are always in a constant state of two-day shadow and the women haven't got legs like gorillas. How come the batteries ran out in Hurley's walkman, but the torches still seem to be fully charged. And how come none of them are hideously sunburnt? I mean, come on!

REGARDING THE GENETIC MIRROR THEORY Supposedly Written By Marseille Rousseau Specifically this end part of the article that is circulating around giving the theory of the numbers 4,8,15,16,23 & 42: Roussau and his team (wife, included) went to the 8th continent. You can figure out how they died and why by the numbers and equations. It also fits with every character. You can predict when they will die. There are others on the island who are twins of the survivors, but have been there 23 years longer. There is a book Roussau wrote 16 years ago in 1988 when he came up with the theory. Thats where I got it from. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the basis for the story!!!!! Danielle Rousseau IS THE WIFE. She said her and her HUSBAND and their TEAM were on a scientific expedition. Her husband IS Marseille. The show premiered in the year 2004 .. subtract 16 (the number of years Danielle has been stranded on the island) from 2004 = 1988 the supposed year this guy wrote the theory. This is more stuff to make us think and drive us crazy!!!!!!!!

Had a thought this morning about the Genetic Mirror Theory. The first pair of twins we were introduced to on the island could be the Polar Bears - there were two of them remember and they certainly looked alike to me :)

I don't know why, but the logo on the medicine cabinet reminds me of the Umbrella Corporation logo from Resident Evil. How long before the zombies arrive?

Locke could not have had his legs injured in the box factory fire since Hurley won the lottery "about a year and a half ago" as he told Charley around the fire and Locke's 'accident' was 4 years ago. Good catch on the numbers. What's the 15??? Also, look closer on the cryptic wall. The word "sick" is preceded by the letter M and all inside an eyeball......."eyeMsick".

There is a genetic mirror theory but I cant find any reference to a french dude writting it - Aubrey Nye (who is a woman and not french) wrote a book about genetic twins http://www.alibris.com/search/detail.cfm?bid=8353636620&full=1 But it doesnt have any of the Lost numbers about it so looks like someone made the story up.
