Has the Arrested ship sailed?

by Lacy Hall, posted Sep 26th 2005 3:45PM
arrested development boatI need a show to watch on Monday nights. Right now, I have nothing. I haven't had anything on Monday nights in a long while. Not since Alf went off the air. Everybody says Arrested Development and I do really want to check that show out, but is it too late? I think I missed the boat on it. How long do you really have before you can successfully jump aboard with a pre-existing show? Recently, I tried to get one of my roommates to watch The OC and I filled him in on all the backstory. I felt like I was attempting to recap the entire Revolutionary War from the viewpoint of both the Red Coats and the Revolutionaries, during the span of a commercial break. It was just a disaster. Is it possible to catch up on a series after its 3 seasons deep? I tried to jump aboard with The Sopranos, and I spent three weeks straight holed up in my living room with the first five seasons on DVD. (I literally missed most of August.) I found the entire process bittersweet. On one hand, I enjoyed the show, but on the other hand...nobody wanted to talk about season 2 with me and I had some things I wanted to talk about. So, is Arrested Development out of my reach?

Lacy, my coworkrs are staring at me, because I cannot stop laughing at your "what?" comment. Truly classic. FYI, Medium is OK, but Miami Vice, I mean CSI: Miami, not so good.

Just watch it, it's worth it. Scott Baio as Bob Loblaw? And you're even questioning it?

loosy-lacy-lucy, I don't think you suck, just for the record ;) - and I just started watching arrested development last week after all the fuss on tv squad at the end of last season. I found it delightful and I'm just going with the flow... I'll figure it all out eventually (and reading the recaps helps)

I should tell you, too, as you can probably tell from these comments, the AD fans LOVE getting newbies. So if you ever did just watch an earlier season and want to discuss it, find a message board and you'll almost certainly find people who will be up for discussing it, and will also probably point out some jokes that you wouldn't have noticed without having seen it a few times.

Dear Ferley, My name is Lacy Hall, not Lucy Hall. If you're going to tell someone they suck, at least have the common courtesy to spell their name right. That's all I ask. Sincerely, Lacy Hall PS- Also, I'm gonna take everybody's advice (er, even Ferley's) and give Arrested Development a shot. Hell, I might even catch Kitchen Confidential too.

I agree with everyone else. I started watching Arrested Development last year by accident, and I had no knowledge of any of the previous background story. It was so damn good I went out and bought the DVD's. The writing for the show is just so dammed good, and even if you don't get the "in jokes", chances are that the episode that you end up watching first will be referenced sometime in the future anyways. Plus it's just so good to say "I'm Oscar!" somewhere in public and have someone say "Dot Com!" as a response. It's like joining a secret club.

Today I read two articles from Lucy Hall, and the both sucked. I do not understand how this girl writes on this site if she has not watched The Sheild or Arrested ever. Get a tivo or Dvr and start to watch some tv and start writing on how good or bad the shows are. Not on how you have sunday dinner and have nothing to watch since alf, come on girl. Tv is not that hard to watch and understand. AD is full on recaps and in less then ten minutes you will love this show and understand what is goin on. Somewhat. In todays world if you want to get into a show late in the game join Netflix and rent the DVD's. Or go to the internet. It is So Easy. That is all I have to say about that.

Three episodes. No matter how confused you are, give it three episodes (assuming it lasts that long). By that time, you should start to recognize the characters. Perhaps you will even understand a self-reference or two. It really is a great show.
