Lost's dharma Shark--how do you explain this?

by Jason McCabe Calacanis, posted Oct 1st 2005 4:59PM
lost shark symbolI'm a huge fan of LOST, and when I spotted the  dharma ink on the shark (S02E02: Adrift) I almost fell off my seat. "Did you see that!?!!" I exclaimed to my sigother.

"The shark... it had the symbol on it!" I explained. "No way... that makes no sense" she replied.

We were both right. How they heck do you explain a shark with a tattoo on it? You can't drug a shark and put a tattoo on it--they have to keep moving, they're sharks! Obviously, no shark is going to stand still while someone puts ink on it.

So, what does that leave? Is it a dolphin? Is it mechanical? Is it all a dream? Discuss.

I just read something saying that in the first season we learned there was a cargo plane that crashed some years ago on the island, which may have been a Dharma/Hanso Foundation plane. That would explain alot about the polar bears, the shark, and the horse that Kate and Sawyer saw. #18 had it right, the numbers definitely are the key, somehow. My question is this: what function (if any) does the computer fulfill with those numbers 4-8-15-16-23-42? And why the bloody hell would there be another facility (i think there are six on the island, personal theory lol) that would try to communicate with The Swan, thereby causing another "incident" to occur?

To the person that said that we need to accept that everything on the Island is weird and we need to get away from reality - I disagree. I believe that the black 'smoke' we saw was in fact minute computers known as 'Catoms'. QUOTE: Claytronics If you thought the shape-shifting baddies from the Terminator movies only exist in movies, then think again. Scientists from the US are currently developing a new technology called Claytronics. They are working on a new particle-type material, which is made of tiny self-organising robots called claytronic atoms or catoms. Catoms can stick to each other and communicate with built-in wireless technology. The goal is to create a shape-shifting material which can replicate an object of any shape instantly - anything from a knife, to a bowl, to a human. They currently have catoms the size of tennis balls which can replicate objects, but using advanced nanotechnology, they hope to reduce each catom to the size of a dust particle which will mean claytronics will be able to replicate objects with a higher definition. That was taken from this website - http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:dZCQ-2D03_MJ:smartmoves.questacon.edu.au/teachers/topics/nanotechnology.asp+smart+dust+catoms&hl=en This would explain a number of things...For example, Jack's Dad, Polar Bears, Shannons 'Walt' Visions, The branded shark, The Black smoke, The horse in a recent episode, even the Black Rock...Most things really. These catoms can also enter a persons body and perform complex operations which would explain the fact that Locke can now walk. There are websites that discuss the fact that the catoms are stronger around children which explains the 'Others' (who I believe to be the original Dharma team) need to take the children. I have such a strong belief in this theory...somebody please please prove it wrong because I don't want to know what it's all about!!! Jakko

The most recent podcast from the Official Lost site (ABC) has the writers talking a bit about the Dharma Initiatives and mentioning that there were more than one Dharma projects on the island. The Dharma logo seen in the bunker found by the Tailies has an arrow on it instead of a swan because it was part of an abandoned Arrow project. It's possible/probable that the logo on the shark was yet another Dharma project. The film mentioned there were several projects/experiments. Also, apparently Locke and Eko are about to discover something interesting about the film in the Nov 30 episode...

on www.dharmainitiative.com you can highlight the invisible text below the dharma emblem and it might help you find out what the shark is all about

There are five research stations, right? We've seen two so far, and we don't have a clue where any of the others might be...but we do know, oddly enough, that there is a cable coming out of the ocean. Seems a bit unusual when you think about it. At any rate, all I'm saying here is that the shark has some link to the Dharma thing, which everyone already knows...but if there's an underwater research station...well, that's cool.

Guys, don't forget... the polar bears were brought there by the shipwreck. Remember she said it was a research vessel from the Arctic, and that the bears got loose after the wreck. Nothing mysterious there... just weird enough to make things interesting for the show. As for the shark and it's tattoo, I'm betting that it's never explained. Just something they decided to throw in there to mess with our heads. The writers for this show are good at doing that. After all, there are TONS of hidden references to "the numbers" (and I'm not talking about the many OBVIOUS references).

I'm in a Lost-deprived country, so I don't recognise the symbol. So for a minute there I thought it was the Laughing Man symbol from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Which would make even less sense.

Don't forget one thing about the "16 Years" -- if you do the math on the messages it's really just under 6 years! (~7.3 million iterations, playing for ~25 seconds each means the message played for 182 million seconds/3 million minutes/50k hours/2112! days/5.8 years) ... is my math wrong? Is the show 'wrong' on purpose? Or did they just think no one would try to calculate it out. I mean, even The French Woman doesn't really know how long she's been there or "Alex" has been missing. Was the black guy from the second group a passenger on the plane or was he a slave from the "Black Rock" ship? I love the questions but can't stand this 3 week break!
