Parents group doesn't like FOX

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 19th 2005 4:16PM

Arrested DevelopmentThe Parents Television Council says that shows on FOX topped their annual list for the worst shows for family viewing.

Among the offenders: Arrested Development, Family Guy, American Dad, and The War At Home. The best show for the family? Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Because wood and nails don't tell raunchy jokes, I guess.

Other shows they like: American Idol, Ghost Whisperer, Everybody Hates Chris, and Three Wishes. Other shows they don't like: The O.C., Cold Case, Two and a Half Men, CSI, and Desperate Housewives

It seems like the PTC has too much time on their hands to just sit and watch TV all day to find something they consider bad. FOX is not the only channel on the tube, I say Bozell change the channel. I am sick and tired of these so-called concerned parents that expect the government to raise their children. These are your kids, not the Feds'. You raise them, you teach them values and morals, dont expect TV shows to do that for you. I remember when teachers disciplined kids in school until parents said "you dont tell me how to raise my kid" or "you have no right to hit my kid". The result, gang members. Now they cry for the FCC to raise their kids. I swear, its just like that time I had to entertain the White House . . . woogidy, woogidy, woo!!

I watched every show on TV as a child, from the moment I was home from school till Benny Hill was over at 11:00, then off to bed. Nearly every night, there isn't much for a kid to when you live in the middle of nowhere; it's dark by 4:30 and oh, by the way, -20 degrees outside. No one thought anything of what I watched or how it affected me...granted, I do get very turned on by the Benny Hill theme song http://musicselections.com/tv/yaktysax.mid and every time I go a week or more without getting any, if you know what I mean, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, I tend to want to wear caftans and lots of bracelets, ala Mrs. Roper, but I turned out just fine. I am certain any children lucky enough to get to watch AD, Simpsons, Family Guy, (The War at Home not so much, I hate that Rappaport guy) will grow up to be kind, loving, cut-off wearing, magicians, that eat way too many donuts while constantly lusting for their cousins/not cousins.

"Here's" to the PTC rather. Dumb.

We should be applauding instead of ridiculing these private efforts to inform, as they are vastly more desirable than government controls. So hear's to the PTC for helping parents monitor television in their homes, and for helping me watch Arrested Development unmolested as long as is possible.

By the way, I thought of something else to say on the matter of smut TV. Sometimes it's not the child's fault that they are subjected to the "TV Babysitter". And, when that happens, they will probably only carry on their parents traditions and ways. Imagine a kid who has nothing else to watch but moral and ethical stuff to watch versus a kid who has total smutt to watch. They will probably grow up to be very different with much different attitudes. Again, not the child's fault.

It is a shame that networks have resorted to using cartoons to put out their filth. I guess they couldn't find enough actors and actresses willing to throw away their careers by saying and doing all of the stuff they do on those shows. While it is true that there are "parental controls" it is also true that when you talk about family, there are idiots making some pretty stupid decisions regarding what is considered family and what it not. Just because their own values have sunk to an all-time low doesn't mean that everyone's has to. It's an utter disgrace and there should be more people taking action on this matter. Even as an adult I know there are channels set up for adult viewing, but I also like good clean shows that my whole family can watch. Even so, I don't look for the kind of stuff coming from some of these choice cartoons. They need to know their audience(young and old) doesn't care for this kind of trash(choice or not). By the way, I don't need a parental lock on my TV because my daughter knows right from wrong and whether it's moral or not, because I have taught her well.

I know some parents use the TV as a babysitter, This group is listing the shows as not being family friendly, implying that they are with them in front of the tube. What I find odd is why are they watching television at all? I mean I love arrested develpment and certainly know I wouldn't watch it with my kids, so instead I would tape or tivo it and do non television activities with the family, which is better anyway. Groups like these stress the importance of family, well, then they should get away from the tube and get to know their family instead of being detached watching TV.

If parents would actually monitor what their kids watched instead of using the TV as a babysitter... And who says every show has to be "family friendly"???
