Trump blames Martha for Apprentice slide

by Chris Thilk, posted Oct 20th 2005 5:32PM

Apprentice logoI love, love, love this. Donald Trump has zeroed in on Martha Stewart as the cause of the declining ratings suffered by his original version of The Apprentice. He says that confusion between the two has led some viewers to leave his show. Both he and producer/creator Mark Burnett think that NBC failed the franchise by scheduling them on consecutive nights. My favorite part of all this is how they're pinning a good deal of the blame on the names causing confusion. Stewart's show was labeled as The Apprentice: Martha Stewart as a way to extend the brand and they're now saying that the similar names are the problem. Sounds like Burnett and Trump are trying to deflect as much of the blame as possible.

If you want to know the problem with Martha's "Apprentice" it is that it is an exact carbon copy of Donald's "Apprentice" just like all of the copies that showed up this summer. Gordon Ramsay's "Hell's Kitchen" was the only one to take the concept and give it a major shake-up. That's what Martha's show needed to do, and more to the point it's what Donald's show should probably look at. Martha had an interesting point in her last episode when she told Jim "This is not a game." It shouldn't be a game, but most people in both shows has adopted a "Survivor" mindset - stab the other guy before you get stabbed. Is this the way to pick someone to work for you?

And people are getting a bit tired of it, come on it is the forth season, and it still is mainly the same thing that happens in each episode. And having two Apprentices in parallel do not make it easier to get people to watch. It is just the natural cause of every TV-concept to start to slide after 4 seasons when there is no innovation.

Why has the original Apprentice such a bad show.... easy they treat it as a game... you don't connect with the individuals... they are lacking a genuine personality... Then the task are well... tired retreads for other seasons... replace burger king with Dominos... replace renovating a loft to renovating a house... How do you up the ratings... simple... get interesting people (and don't do a 50% creme da creme 50% bottom of the barrel mix)... get interesting task... simple really... which is why Martha's brand is a little better. She has personality, one that isn't abrasive, interesting contestants and new task (for the most part). But what really does it are the candidate.
