An entire season in one glorious night

by Keith McDuffee, posted Oct 27th 2005 4:27PM
Alias season four dvdsI remember when my sister-in-law would rave and rave about this new series called Alias. She told us it was a show we just had to watch, but since we'd missed over half the season, we decided it was one show we'd pass on. Then, out of nowhere, ABC announces a full-day marathon of Alias's first season, bringing us up-to-date with the show. And so we sat there all day, episode through episode, and caught up with the series in what felt like a wink. The New York Times has a piece about others who've done similar marathons, only through the magic of DVDs. Have you ever sat through an entire season in one sitting?

While not a whole series of a TV show, I did undertake a similarly daunting task... All three LOTR extended editions back to back. I take my TV-on-DVD marathons a lot closer to a disc a night rather than a single day. Gotta have SOME anticipation in there!

Entourage S1: clearly not exhausting (8 episodes), but worth it.

I actually watched all 4 seasons of Alias and the first season of Veronica Mars this summer...Im currently working on Lost season 1...I never sat in front of the tv for a whole season tho...24 hours straight...I couldnt do that...I have watched at most probably 5-6 episodes a day. Summer is such a great time to catch up on tv...screw watching reruns or reality show that I have no interest in.

I have to say some shows like Alias and Battlestar Galactica and the new Prison Break - all will watch better if you do actually marathon them because they are all so tightly linked (unlike shows like Smallville and Boston Legal, heh even Lost - where if you miss one you wont be completely lost) I really cannot remember a show before Alias that had me by the balls to keep watching..I watched seasons 1 and 2 in 3-4 eps at a time...now I think that hurt it a bit in terms of no new viewers but I guess that is not that true seeing everyone else is following that model too now. Also I applaud ABC for running complete seasons on their station when they have actual DVD's to sell. It's quite a striking argument against the movie industry who doesnt want to sell same-day DVD's because the theatres feel threatened.

I own a bunch of full season DVD sets, but the only one I watched from start to finish was the first season of Dawson's Creek. Hey! I love teen melodrama!

I've done two day marathons for 24 seasons 1 and 2. It was quite a long time to sit in front of my laptop, and I vowed to never do that to my sleep cycle again... I have watched all of Coupling and The Office in a day though, but those seasons are like 6 eps, so that's easy. The longest that I've ever watched a season on DVD was The Wire, which was really really good, but hard to digest, so I spread that over like a year. :)
