VS: Anderson Cooper vs. Aaron Brown

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 5th 2005 11:07AM

Aaron BrownAnderson CooperSo CNN has dumped NewsNight anchor Aaron Brown. Of course, the details are still murky, so we're not sure if CNN got rid of him completely or if they just wanted to take him off the regular NewsNight gig and give it to rising star Anderson Cooper. Did they ask him to leave the network or did Brown leave on his own accord because he didn't see a place for himself at the new outlet?

So tell us: which one do you like more?

well...2 months into "Anderson Cooper 360" and all I can say is BRING BACK AARON!!!!! I am soooo tired of all those raised eyebrow head cocked a certain way stare intently into the camera Cooper moments. The sound you hear is a toilet flushing down the last remnants of integrity at CNN.To think it only took 20 years to kill Ted's dream....sad

I've read the comments of the people above and do not have much to add. My night always included Aaron Brown. When he did not know the answer to something because certainly life events can be baffling, he let us know and I shared his frustration. Or when he was sick and tired of a visitor on the show being disengenous, he stopped the person in their tracks to at least let the visitor know and the viewership know that the visitor was not contributing anything to the "conversation." Anderson Cooper reminds me of the character played by William Hurt on the movie Broadcast News (I think that was the movie). The world must have been enthralled by Anderson doing coverage of hurricanes reporting "look out! look out!" when a street sign fell down..or "the rain is coming down in vertical sheets." Like, duh?? I did not hear his comment towards the senator who was praising FEMA and everybody in government but I was impressed when I read that in one of the above comments, I must admit that. So I hope he gravitates less toward the glitter and more towards substance...I am sure he is a rising star. But I would love to see Aaron Brown pop up somewhere else...and I will watch him. He just had this personality that I liked, sort of an "aww shucks" persona but with true intelligence that was immediately obvious at the same time. His questions did not seem canned..he seemed to listen to the visitor on the show and took some time in articulating a question back to the visitor, based on what the visitor had just said. It is for these reasons that I watched him and that I miss him to this day.

Well - It's middle of Dec - enough time for CNN to get a true read on the viewer's reaction to their decision to elbow out one of their best. My family and I belong to the huge number of loyal CNN viewers who have now also left CNN - mostly in frustration and anger. Without Mr. Brown's seasoned, articulate, thoughtful, trustworthy and interesting work given with his touch of humor, dignity and genuine caring...CNN simply no longer is the same...it is turning into a Fox wannabe - that may bring in more of those type of viewers - but it is a true loss for all those of us out in americaland who truly value articulate, calm, engaging, thoughtful, respectful, yet provocative, unsensational, anchoring with a touch of wry humor and class. All the remaining anchors at CNN now are talking AT you while the non-stop, constant, moving graphics and bold colors are dancing behind them like you were in a club. ( Lou DObbs remains as someone who talks to you not AT you..but they are covering him up in more dancing color graphics too. I go to a news channel to hear true news of what's happening - and see some good photography of the story - not the dancing set swimming in front of your eyes constantly in movement...and entertaining little featurettes on People magazine subjects. The fact that there was no longer room for an anchor like Mr. Brown at CNN under Mr. Klein's watch...unfortunately, says a great deal about what CNN is turning into now. That is a genuine loss for America and the world. Ted Turner must be shaking his head - all the viewer's wanting real news - given with class, balance, care, thoughtfulness, dignity and yes - calmness, are looking elsewhere now. The dedicated anchors left at CNN - are dancing as fast as they can - turning themselves into whatever Mr.Klein wants. Seems to me like they are becoming more frenetic...or is that the set and pics in the background that won't stop changing?? Toni N.

Bah, it's not about Anderson Cooper vs. Aaron Brown. It's about factual integrity of CNN's news. If you lack interesting depth and perspective enough to present facts, actual facts, versus the endless stream of polls, speculation and just plain falsehoods, like the "rapes and murders" in the Superdome adding to the sense of hopelessness and fear for Americans, instead of actually using CNN's scope and perspective to actually do something useful, like tell the truth.

I have followed Aaron since he was in Seattle and think his style the most unique in TV broadcasting. My husband used to say "you're good Aaron" after some particularly good story. We're waiting to see his return in some news slot which will utilize his talents for 'understanding' the softer side of stories. Can't wait for the next chapter.

I am a big fan of both Aaron Brown and Anderson Cooper. The fact that CNN decided to let Aaron Brown go is unfortunate. It will also be unfortunate when the "over-exposed" Anderson Cooper is asked to leave. Like the current administration in Washington, has CNN lost its way?

To me, CNN has lost it's "CNN-inity" It has become a look alike of all other newshows on the airwaves, especially hiring all of those old anchors and pseudo-journalists from other networks. Likeable anchors like Judy Woodruff, Natalie Allen, Martin Savidge gone (mainly to MSNBC as fill in anchors) and CNN hired that awful manager who had been fired from the NBC station in Chicago after he wanted to put Jerry Springer on the newscast as a Commentator causing Veteran News Anchors Carol Marin and Ron Majors to quit on the spot. Only ratings drive the news, not circumspect journalisim, I believe. What do you think?

I definitely watch CNN much less than previously. Aaron Brown was thoughtful and easy to watch. Anderson Cooper myay be the new wave but new is not always progress. I actually prefer Tucker Carlsons' show to the present 360 debacle. MSNBC has become my preferred news channel.

now i have to say that i have nothing bad to say about aaron brown. but the only reason that i watched his show was that anderson cooper co-hosted it with him. not to mention that, when he was covering a story on ac360 he would sometimes continue it on news night with aaron brown. i first discovered anderson cooper when he was on abc in the wee hours of the morning. i like the way he delivers the story and the way you can tell that he cares about the things he covers. i have been hearing a lot of complianing about the change, and i for one am tired of poor ac getting bashed.
