Comedy Central renews Drawn Together - Why?

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 9th 2005 2:05PM
Drawn Together Hey, Colbert Report fans! Don't get all high and mighty that Comedy Central decided to renew your favorite show through the end of next year. Looks like the network is renewing any moderately successful show, in hopes of catching another Chappelle-style buzz. Case in point: Drawn Together, the "animated reality show". CC just picked the show up for a third season, even though the second season is barely underway. It looks like the ratings in that critical 18-34 demo are pretty good, leading the powers that be to decide that another season is in order.

I don't understand why, though. The show, while it started out strong, stopped being funny about halfway into its first season. After it effectively skewered each and every reality-show convention, it just became an exercise in "how many ways we can depict cartoon private parts without being censored." I can't imagine a third season's going to tread any new ground. Seeing how generous CC is with its shows, it really makes me wonder what shows like Tough Crowd did to get cancelled. Did Colin Quinn threaten the network president or something?

I don't know why. It's horrible. Thankfully I have a TiVo so I can easily avoid whatever I don't want to watch. My friend on the other hand loves this. Go figure.

Nope, Tough Crowd just plain sucked. Drawn Together isn't actually watched, so no one realizes it sucks ;)

Too funny, the post is about how crappy the show is, and the comments are all gushing about being happy that its back for a third season. Adding my voice to the chorus, I like it too, and I'm happy its back!

Drawn Together's first season was rather crappy; I mean with only seven episodes (one being cut due to Christopher Reeve's death) and numerous airing schedule changes, it was hard to even keep up with when new episodes would air. But the second season is starting off strong and hitting its mark; I think the writers are excited to still be working after the first season basically tanking. And if season 2 has seven episodes as well, then after today they're more than halfway completed.
