Lost: Abandoned

by C.K. Sample, III, posted Nov 9th 2005 10:30PM
lostIt's been several weeks since we had a new episode of Lost, so it's understandable if you're somewhat...er, lost... you've forgotten what is going on. Here's a short refresher before we jump into all the spoilers like who died (gasp!) after the jump.

In the last episode, we had a Jin and Sun flashback-replete episode that was steady-paced and heartfelt. Michael went looking for Walt and Jin went looking for Michael. Sun lost her wedding ring and went looking for it. As they search, we're treated to flashbacks that culminate with Sun and Jin's first meeting when they "found" one another and Sun finding her ring and Jin finding Michael. The most exciting moment was when Jin and Mr. Echo were hiding in the bushes while "the Others" walked past. This, of course, preps us for an action packed episode during sweeps week. That episode was tonight's episode: Abandoned. Read on after the jump for all the details...

Interestingly, the "previously on Lost" segment started with Boone's death, foreshadowing the death in this episode. The show started off proper with Sayid taking Shannon to a little makeshift bungalow for the two of them to share and then they kissed. The first non-blackmailed kiss of the show between people who only met on the island. Then everything cuts to Mr. Echo, Michael, and Jin returning to the camp of survivors from the other end of the plane. Then we cut back to Shannon and Sayid in each others arms as if they've just made love. If this were a horror movie, one of them would be marked for death. Sayid leaves the tent and Shannon is confronted by dripping, backwards talking Walt and she screams before the intro graphic plays.

We come back to everyone thinking that Shannon had a nightmare, and then we flashback to her teaching dance. We find out that Shannon's father died in a head-on car accident, and it was the same car accident that Jack's wife died was in as we see Jack in the background at the hospital and the description of the crash is the same.

The episode then cut to Sawyer showing signs of losing energy, teasing us with his possible death, then a quick cut back to the main camp with Shannon digging around for Walt's possessions to have Vincent the dog sniff his shirt and track down Walt. While chasing Vincent through the woods, she comes across Boone's grave and little wooden cross.

We come back from commercial to Claire's baby crying, but Locke appears and saves the day as he usually does, calming the baby with ease, and he learns that Charlie came across one of the heroin Virgin Mary statues. Then we're back to the cross at Boone's grave and a flashback to Shannon's dad's funeral and Boone's arrival at the funeral to check on her. Shannon confesses to Boone that she thinks his mother resented Shannon's relationship with her dad.

Back to the back plane castaways, traipsing across the island, discussing cutting inland. Michael confronts the back-plane refugees about what has been going on with them and why they keep getting shushed in the jungle. We discover that the others have been picking them off left and right since they first landed. Michael says, "They took my son" and Ana replies, "They took a lot of things."

After the commercials (lots of short commercials in this episode), we return to Sayid and Shannon talking about losing loved ones. Then we're launched knee deep in another flashback about Shannon's internship, which she gets, but she doesn't have any money and her mother-in-law doesn't want to help her or give her any of the money her father left behind when he died.

Charlie and Locke are playing backgammon and they have a little chat about the baby and Claire and their relationships with her. There seems to be some struggle between the two of them mounting for Claire and her baby, which seems to be a central struggle of the island considering last season's episodes surrounding Ethan. Back to the back-end-planers going through the woods and Sawyer stumbling and passing out directly to a commercial to make us think he's the one who is going to die.

Ana starts losing control of her group as Michael pleads with everyone to help him help Sawyer. Then Shannon and Sayid are out looking for Walt and Shannon tells Sayid that they found the messages from the raft and she knows that Walt is out there. Then they're back to the back-end-plane group and they lose Cindy and start hearing whispered voices everywhere as Ana blames Mr. Echo for their predicament and then pulls a gun and shouts "Run!" as we cut to yet another set of commercials.

We come back from the commercials directly into a Shannon and Boone flashback. Shannon asks Boone for help after his mom said no to helping her, but he's leaving to start working for his mom. Then we cut back to Shannon stumbling in the raining woods asking Sayid why he doesn't believe her or believe in her, and she breaks down proclaiming that she needs him to believe in her and that she thinks he's going to leave her as soon as they get out of there. Sayid responds, saying "I will never leave you. I love you." Whoa. Sayid falls fast and hard after scoring a home run.

But in the middle of their embrace we start hearing the voices again and they both see Walt in the forest telling them to shush. Shannon chases after him and Sayid trips while chasing after her. A gun fire is heard and Shannon emerges from the woods shot and dying in Sayid's arms as he looks up to see that Ana is the one holding the gun who shot her. Sayid begins to get up in anger and the episode ends. Next week, the story of the other survivors since the landing.

I thought the first scene during the recap wasn't recapping Boone's death, but the existance of massive amounts of heroine/coke/whatever on the island.

I think this episode was a step back in the right direction... Finally. One thing however the show is struggling from this year is that they are leaving stories (and Characters) in the can this year for weeks at a time. No Jack (except for the hospital cameo) or Kate in this episode.. the entire Hatch story is now a non-starter. Last year they just seemed to be able to tell everyone's story at once while still digging deep in on some people. This year it seems to be all or nothing. Next week preview actually gave me a great idea. It would have pissed alot of people off, but I think it would have been interesting if they opened up season 2 just like they did Season 1 - except from the perspective of the other side of the island. Carry that on for a few weeks before they run into Sawyer and them on the beach... then do a quick flash to Desmond in the hatch. I know this would have been trouble in the Internet world, but it would have interesting none the less I think. And on a side note, what the heck does a guy have to do to get some stars around here? I need my Top 20 ranking back! :)

I gotta hand it to the writers of this show. I had already heard the spoilers about who was going to be killed and wasn't expecting much, just as to when and how it was going to happen, but leave it to them to completely take me by surprise on how she was killed. Brilliant.

"I really want to know- how is the Rutherford's story going to be wrapped up, now that both island-residents are dead?" I feel that the Rutherford story has been wrapped up after tonight. Boone's story was already told. We know he grew up having feelings for Shannon. He had to bail her out endless times and even made out with her. After tonight we now know her full story. We know why she always hooked up with sugar daddy's and how it made her so bitchy. It was probably never meant to be for Jack to find out it was Shannon's dad on the other table, so there is pretty much no more backstory to tell on her any longer, while there is still plenty to discover about the other island residents.

Did anyone else notice how they shot one of the scenes last night. Go back and take a look where locke is swaddling the baby. There is one quick shot that looks like the nativity. First a man walks by very biblical like with a cane, then theres the shot of claire the baby and locke and behind them are three people with gifts ala the three kings. Im not crazy if someone tivoed it can you go back and look and even get a screen shot. Perhaps this is the story of the new world.

"Jack was at the hospital. I was looking for that too but I didn't see that." It was the scene where Shannon and her step mother first meet up with the doctor who told them about her father. As the doctor started to speak, you see Jack walking past them on their right.

you gotta give it to these guys. the whole series, they make Shannon out to be a spoiled rich bitch. Then, in one episode, they made me like her and feel for her..and then bang! they kill her.
