The power of The O.C.

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 9th 2005 11:12AM

The OCThe LA Times has an article about the power The O.C. has to propel a band from fringe to mainstream. Just ask The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, or Rooney, whose album sales tripled after the band performed on one episode. The article features bandmates from Citizens Here and Abroad, a San Francisco rock group, who shipped a CD to producers of The O.C. in hopes of getting some exposure. It turns out, they're not the only band doing that.

Other interesting tidbits:

  • The woman who supervises music for The O.C. does the same job for Grey's Anatomy, Without a Trace, and Rescue Me.
  • There are as many as 14 songs per episode of The O.C.
  • The O.C. commissioned '80s cover songs from Nada Surf, Jem, and Youth Group.
I just checked my iTunes library and I see that I have purchased 13 songs from different The O.C. mixes. My favorites: Goodnight and Go by Imogen Heap, Dice by Finley Quaye & William Orbit, California by Phantom Planet and Hello Sunshine by Super Furry Animals (it's the song that was played when Seth and Summer lost their virginity).

Why did I give up this show? God, I'm totally having withdrawals.
