Cheers spinoff to star Kirstie Alley?

by Karina Longworth, posted Nov 10th 2005 10:58PM
kirstie.jpgIs Kirstie Alley signing on to star in a spinoff of Cheers? That's the rumor that's going around. All that Jenny Craig stuff aside, Alley needs the work – after all, now that she isn't really all that fat, I imagine the well of stories over at the Fat Actress camp has sort of dried up – and she's said to be interested. The spinoff would feature Alley's character from Cheers, Rebecca Howe, as a divorcee living in Boston. Funny - I was just watching a rerun of that *other* Cheers spinoff the other night, Frasier, with Ted Danson guest-starring. At one point, Sam Malone told Fraiser that Rebecca was divorced and "back at the bar". Frasier said, "Oh, Rebecca's working at Cheers?" Sam said, "No, she's just gone back to the bar." So: do we like this idea?

IF the same writers could do it, and, IF it was treated like Rip Van Winkle tale, that is, it's just 12 years later, all the regulars are still there, and it's still CHEERS! complete with the original theme song. BUT, Rebecca would have to be older, more world wise in her humor and look like the years had not been that kind to her.

Why does anyone think Kirstey Alley is funny. Anyone remember Veronica's Closet? Her "humor" is obnoxious and grating. If it wasn't for the great comedians around Alley, Veronica's Closet would have been a failure.

I think that it would be ok....it would be better if she were to move in the first episode to another city. I would much rather see a series with Norm and Vera or Cliff and his mother (maybe after getting to married to some lovable quack who would accept his eccentricities.

What would interesing in this case is the HUGE length of time between the main show and the spin off. To my knowledge this has never happened before. Direct spin-offs never usually work, because people still want the "original" show. Look at Joey, if that was a baseline show it would be ok, but people want to see Joey on Friends, not Joey not on Friends. But in this case, so much time has passed, The original factor I don't think applies.

As long as the same writers are used, then yeah, it might just work. Personally, I prefer the Rebecca years slightly more than the Diane years. She has the potential to carry a show (okay, Fat Actress isn't a good example). So this would be the third Cheers spinoff?

I don't like the idea of setting it in Boston. it will be strange for her to still live there and not intereact at the bar or see the other Cheers characters all the time. Perhaps if they went the Frasier route and move the show to another city.
