Advertisers shy away from Nip/Tuck

by Adam Finley, posted Nov 11th 2005 12:45PM

nip/tuckNip/Tuck isn't exactly family fare, and it's been the target of the Parents Television Council for some time. The watchdog group has sent out hundreds of letters to advertisers. Some companies, most recently Toyota, have pulled their spots from the show. The letters chastise the show for being too violent and too sexually explicit, as well as trying to push every taboo TV will allow. Actually, that sounds like more of an incentive to watch. Nip/Tuck is one of the most popular shows on cable right now, and I'm guessing it won't be toning down anything in the near future.

I do respect those groups who have filed grievances with Toyota. However, I do think they are missing the real underlying stories on Nip/Tuck...There are actually family oriented themes on that show...one just has to watch and pay attention. Also, FX is be responsible by placing the warning at the beginning of the show...and with the 10pm EST start time. I love Nip/Tuck..it's a guilty pleasure that does have wholesome themes in it. The people are screwed up but you see the human struggle all around. And that helps to bring the viewers life into focus (on what's important)...oh..and it's just plain fun to watch! :-)

This season Nip/Tuck is all about shock value. There's no reason or logic in it. If it continues to be this bad I'll just have to stop watching it. I mean, you are a plastic surgeon, a good one, and decide to work for the government? Ok, fine, probably .0001% may do this. Then you decide to take the family you just finished working on home? And the guy in charge, after finding you did, says: "I can't compel you to bring them back." What? I thought he worked for the feds? I'm sure there's a lot of compelling they can do. As if this wasn't enough: . . . O, forget it. The show's got no brain behind it. I wouldn't mind so much if it had not started out good. I'll just stop watching it, same with Commander in Chief. Enough with the garbage.

When will people learn that not everything on TV is meant for the "Family" Why do these people waste there time. The show is not marketed to Kids and is not on at a time where kids could watch

These same hypocritical companies will no doubt continue to advertise during more "appropriate shows." What makes it appropriate, the fact that it's on network TV? Like the episode of "The War at Home" where Hillary discusses the pros and cons of losing her virginity (at 16)? Or is it the episode of "Desperate Housewives which features Eva Longoria in lingerie, seducing the teenage gardener? Or is it the episode of... you get the point. "Nip/Tuck" definitely pushes the line, but if you really want to keep it clean, advertise during some fluff on the WB and shut up.

Hey - I've never watched Nip/Tuck, but with these blistering anti-endorsements, I might just have to tune in to see what all the fuss is about. I'm guessing this isn't the effect advertisers were looking for :-)
