Comedians of Comedy: Premiere

by Annie Wu, posted Nov 13th 2005 11:01AM

comI instictively pulled myself to Comedy Central last night to watch The Daily Show, forgetting it was a Friday. Instead, I was treated to an episode of the all-new Comedians of Comedy. The show is something like a documentary fused with clips of on-the-road stand-up from the four stars of the show, Maria Bamford, Zach Galifianakis (yes, I had to look that up), Patton Oswalt, and Brian Posehn. These guys do what is called "alternative comedy", which means that they are the geeks of Comedy High School. So while Dane Cook and the popular kids were chillin' inside the cafeteria and the late Mitch Hedberg was smoking behind the school, these four were reading comic books and cracking jokes in their favorite teacher's classroom.

The premiere didn't exactly open with a bang but was funny enough to keep me interested. Zach Galifianakis has a manservant for whatever reason... Creepiest. Guy. Ever. He's like the oldest man alive and he did this weird thing with his tongue in the beginning of the episode and... blech. Maria Bamford got crazy pink hair since I last saw her (but I suppose some change is allowed because I haven't seen anything from her since her Comedy Central Presents special) but she's still pretty much the same. Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn are the most adorable geeks ever, chatting about comic books and how they keep up with the latest releases (in case you're wondering, Oswalt keeps a list and Posehn likes to be surprised). I agree with Galifianakis when he says that there's some sexual tension there. Definitely some male-geek love going on.

It seems like Galifianakis is the most aloof from the group. He's still included in the fun but I didn't see much interaction between him and the other comedians (or perhaps his weird manservant was distracting him). I predict that as the season develops, Galifianakis will provide most of the "outside" observations, Bamford will play the role as the token female in the group (she got journals for all the guys in the first episode... journals with jacket covers! Like, literal jacket covers! It was cute), and the show will come to an end with Posehn and Oswalt in an all-out lovefest. It won't be pretty, but it is inevitable.

By the way, if you have not familiarized yourself with these comedians, you need to do so. Now.

The show was great. When Brian got all reflective on bad past experiences, it felt a little too sad for the show, but they're keeping it real. Sadly, this'll only be 6 episodes long. And yes, that man-servant guy was creepy, but totally adorable at the same time. Oh, and Patton is actually married now.

It shocked the hell out of me to find out that Posehn is married. Married! And Oswalt is engaged. Engaged! I need to go into stand-up comedy....
