How I Met Your Mother: The Duel

by Ryan j Budke, posted Nov 15th 2005 7:47AM
how i met your motherOne of my favorite parts of How I Met Your Mother is the way they handle Marshall and Lily's relationship with such grace and maturity. That's one of the big reasons I'll be sorely disappointed if Lily ends up the mother-in-question, as some of our readers have speculated. Well, needless to say, with tonight's episode degrading to a fencing duel to decide the owner of the guys' apartment, maturity didn't come into play all that much. On with the show!

The episode starts with a conundrum that every pair of room-mates with a kickass apartment runs into. Who gets to keep the space? After Lily finds out that she'd apparently been evicted from her own apartment months earlier, Ted invites her to move in with him and Marshall. Marshall's very touched that Ted wouldn't worry about his own space and would invite his fiancee to move in with them. Barney warns Ted that's just the begining and Lily will soon take over. Ted shoots down Barney's theory, but begins to have doubts when Lily replaces a "shocking" old coffepot of Ted's.

Lily begins to influence Marshall more and more--so much so, that Ted feels like it's constantly a two-on-one defecit. During the hanging of a picture, and subsequent taking down of two swords, Ted and Marshall slowly escalate into a fencing match they decide will determine the ownership of the apartment. The fight ends abruptly when Lily is stabbed by a five-year-old folley. (Just walking through the door, fiancee waiting to stab you... I think this may have happened to me...) At the hospital Lily explains while she loves the apartment, once they're married she wants to start a new life, at a new place, with Marshall.

I continue to love this show. I love how they're playing with the "hook" of the show and sometimes flashing back even further. Like tonight's flashback to the single instant that would take down the table. Barney's "lemon-law" will surely be coming to a town near you shortly. I'm happy this got picked up for an entire season, and hopefully will have many more to come. I can't wait to see how these five friends get to live happily ever after.

Do you know what song was featured in the episode. I have been looking far and wide for it. It's the Nov. 14 episode of How I Met Your Mother. Thanks, Ryan

HI I think he marries Robin's sister because he called her Aunt Robin in the first episode and she does have a sister in Philly.

I only started watching this show because Josh Radnor went to my college, but it is pretty funny. I haven't actually watched a sitcom week to week...possibly ever, but I enjoy the little mystery week to week, and even the kids, who, it's true, aren't great actors, but serviceable, given what they have to work with. Okay, I really enjoyed the stabbing thing--"Do you think she's still your fiancee?" Ha. The cast is super, too--I think Robin is uneven comedically (her segment with the nerd guy wasn't that funny), but I do love Neil Patrick Harris (I bet the "Hey, have you met Ted?" thing catches on too...) Hey, now that Bradley Cooper is free, maybe they could snatch him up. Mostly, I would just like to see that guy get some work.

I wouldn't worry too much about Ted marrying Lily -- in last night's episodes the kids in the future referred to her as "Aunt Lily," just like the pilot referred to "Aunt Robin."

I like this show, but I hate the future segments with the kids. They are appalling actors who in turn are given incredibly little to work with other than to roll their eyes every now and then. I would do away with the whole future thing entirely. Personally, I think the title of the show and the general premise of Ted trying to find someone says it all - no further elaboration is need. The future segments just waste time.
