Lost: The Other 48 Days

by Ryan j Budke, posted Nov 17th 2005 9:00AM
lostTonight we finally got to see what has happened with the "Tail-enders", as C.K. likes to call them, for their time on the island thus far. Quick recap: It makes "our survivors" time on the island look like a Club-Med vacation. Needless to say, things have not been easy for them. You know, I hyped this episode up entirely too much over the past couple of weeks. Sure, it was still a good episode, but not nearly what I had been told, wanted or expected to see. I think this was a gimmicky episode that felt very "fan-produced". The ending with the fast forward was awful. Well enough with the bad news. On with the show!
With all that said, I'd still watch even an extra four bonus minutes of Lost over just about any half hour of TV out there.  We jumped right into the tail enders' lives, starting with the crash and their rescue of themselves. They seem to have more children in their section of the plane, and that comes into play later shortly. The Others don't waste anytime in getting to this group; within the first couple of nights, they are attacked and members of their tribe are dragged off into the night.

The tail-enders do make two important discoveries that we have not found out thus far on "our" side of the island. During one of the attacks on the group, one of the Other's is killed and on their body the survivors find a list of the nine people that had just been taken. They jump to conclusions and imprison one of their own, thinking he is a spy. The true spy, Goodwin, is still running amongst them, and by the time Ana puts it together who is he is, it's nearly too late. In their struggle though, Goodwin admits to her the other big shock: Those that were taken were taken because they were good people.

As everything with Lost, we get some answers and a ton more questions. Why have the Others hit this group so much harder? What's the deal with the "good people"? Where did they come from? This show certainly keeps you guessing. I got most of my gripes out of the way at the top, so I don't need to repeat them. One thing I do like, which will probably be an ignition point for most of you, is Ana-Lucia. I think she is a great character and will be a fantastic catalyst for many stories and drama, which is really what Lost is all about. Do I "like" her character? No, not at all; she's a pain in the ass, but you're not supposed to like her.

Let us know what you think.

Before I go, I'd like to share a couple of our favorite quotes from the chatroom last night. For those of you that didn't join us, you better be there next week (the chatroom changes, so don't use the old link), and for those of you that did, thank you as always for coming -- you guys are a blast.

TVSKeith: So guys, we were told to "watch Mr. Eko's staff". Did anyone mention that yet?
emland67: sounds phallic

tuawchat: 4 extra minutes to make room for Mr Eko's huge staff
mojo1095: hahaha
Ryan: wow ck
Ryan: new low

Ryan: i've tried to model my life as a blend between marty mcfly and alex p keaton

AlltheWhile HrT: it'd be cool if Sayid resurrected Shannon with electrodes and jack'juice and then she got eaten by a polar bear
WCityMike: Is anyone wanting Eko to be bald with a little hat that mysteriously stays on his head at any angle?

Milhouse702: wasn't Bernard going to the bathroom? how is he seatbelted in a regular seat?

DropoutBear8609: don't get too attached to him (this is referring to Ana and Goodwin hitting it off)

emland67: where can I get me a security system like that. i'm tired of the neighbor's dog taking a dump in my yard. (talking about Eko beating the Others that attacked their group)

DropoutBear8609: because i'm eko bitch
DropoutBear8609: that's how i roll

WCityMike: There's no AltHurley ... this side of the island really doesn't have a comic foil, methinks.

WCityMike: Okay, new theory ... altEthan is guy in the gray shirt, not guy in the red sweater.  RedSweatshirtGuy is being set up too much as a red herring.

DropoutBear8609: i would rather drink with ana that sawyer personally

gator1golf: no Motorola logo? LOST executives missed out on product placement (talking about the radio they found in their bunker)

frequeniquity: shes too fast to get furious

WCityMike: So even though Eko is AltLocke, I think he's also AltKate ... at least in terms of the LeaderCompanion role.

"Lost" is just about the closest thing to having an "Ed" reunion by finally having Julie Bowen and Josh Randal in the same show again. Now time to get Tom Cavanagh and/or Justin Long to do a backstory.

I thought the episode was awesome! I think some people just expect too much now. If you think of last nights episode in relation to the first episode in season one, it did the same thing. Set up the scenario's, introduced the characters and the dangers/mysteries of the Island. We now have 4 solid new characters who we will likely get flashbacks for to explain who they are and their connections to the original cast. I loved the fast flashbacks/drum sequence at the end. I audibly yelled "awesome" at the final black out. My only complaint is that they keep making the creepy bad guys from Canada! Geesh!

Perhaps he meant they were "good people" in the same way that I like a "good steak." Not for any morally redeeming qualities, but because its tender and juicy. Wouldn't be the first time that we saw some desert island cannibals. Also, as to Mr. Eko's little hat cocked to the side of his bald head defying Isaac Newton and everyone else that "believes" in gravity - yeah, I keep wanting it to come back as well.

Another great episode.. The Tribal Drum is a great affect that Lost does so well. Even though the ending was predictable, they pulled it off with great cinematic effect. I disagree with the above comments about "good" being strong, rather than being "good" vs evil. My reasoning behind this is that they haven't "stolen" anybody strong from the 1st group. Jack is strong, Sawyer is certainly strong - yet they didn't want any of them. The 2 they did take, or attempt was the Walt and the Innocent baby from Claire. It was very interesting how the producers presented "The Other" to us.. very human and like everyone else.

i definitely thought the end was a little rushed with the tribal drum montage, they should have stretched this out to an hour and a half. but that's my only gripe really, that it wasn't long enough... another recap and some thoughts here; http://foureightfifteensixteen2342.blogspot.com/2005/11/48-days-earlier.html

Regarding the comment that some tailenders were taken because they are "good people": I think they mean "good" in the strategic sense. A strong, healthy person is a "good" person to kill if you are trying to defend yourself or your group. Given that we don't yet know the Others' motives, if they think the survivors are a threat, taking the people they took would have been a "good" strategic move. Nathan even says as much in his explanation to Ana Lucia. Mr. Eko was the first person the Others attempted to take, and he appears to be the strongest. Luckily for him, he was able to thwart his captor. I don't think he meant "good" in the sense that they are good, nice people.

What I dont get is the inaccuracies between previous episodes. Before Ana said "rember what happend to Goodwin" So is she lying to the others about what she did? And if so, why? Granted the initial attacks on the beach were full of tension but I never got the feeling of fright and fear that the tail survivors (I refuse to call them that stupid name) had set us up for in previous episodes.

After watching the first episode this season when the tail enders imprisoned Sawyer, Michael and Jin I knew they must have had an "Ethan" in their group at one time and it turns out I was right. This episode did make me understand what they went through and puts you in Ana's shoes on why she shot Shannon. While I think the others are well trained and strong, I never saw them as being enhanced in their strength. Ethan may have beaten Jack their first time out, but that was because he was a skilled fighter. Jack wound up beating him down another time. Charlie is also a little guy, so it wouldn't be too hard for Ethan to have taken him out as well. Plus the survivors of the tail end killed 3 of the others in hand to hand combat. I am looking forward to the tailenders witnessing the bio-mechanical "monster" in the jungle.

I liked the ep. Some questions answered, others raised, and I thought the fast-forward finale was very gripping. All the Tailie pieces we've been given so far were assembled very neatly, and the "40 days" moment between Ana-Lucia and Mr. Eko was very touching. See... she's not just a heartless meanie! One thing's for sure: This ep certainly whetted my appetite for next week!!

That episode really sucked. Plain and simple. Was way too rushed and didn't really make me feel fulfilled from recording and watching it later. I'm beginning to feel less and less interested in this show...
