Smallville: Solitude

smallvilleWord of warning all my faithful Smallville followers; love on your favorite character as much as you can while you still have the chance. Tonight's episode was not Jor-El's endgame, as some might suspect. A cast member is still going to die in exchange for Clark regaining his powers, and they will not be returning to Smallville. This action is going to go down during the February sweeps and I've heard from a good source just who bites the big Kryptonite bullet. Let me tell you, this one's going to sting. But enough with the ominous foreshadowing. On with the show!
Things kick off this with Clark feeling a little paranoid. With good reason mind you, his father did vow to kill someone important in his life. There are some strange lights and noises above the Kent farm when all of a sudden BOOM! Ma Kent is waking up on the ground. Wouldn't you know it, Clark was right. Martha is now infected with some strange affliction that the local hospital can't treat. Professor Fine drops some Kryptonian knowledge on the Kents, and explains that it's an old torture technique that Jor-El the Terrible used. Back that spaceship up, Clark's father was a dictator? And General Zod was a good guy? Well, anyone who's read the comics just knows that's bs. Unfortunately, Clark, apparently, has never read a Superman comic before, so he buys it hook, line and sinker.

At the good professor's urging, Clark goes to destroy the artic fortress, the one remaining link to his heritage and the one thing still giving Jor-El power over Clark. However, once the self-destruct sequence has begun, Fine turns on Clark. Professor Fine produces a meteor rock and places it on Clark's chest, inhibiting his powers. With Clark out of the way, he opens a portal allowing the "benevolent" General Zod access to Earth. Luckily, Chloe followed Clark and shows up just in time to remove the metor rock. Clark opens a superpowered can of butt whoopin', apparently killing his teacher in the process. Don't worry though folks, there's actually talk of making James Marsters a series regular, so I don't think Braniac is quite gone yet.

I missed last week's episode, so I've now had two straight non-Lana episodes, and you know what? I didn't miss her nearly as much as I thought I would. I love Kristin Kreuk as much as the next heterosexual male, and have actually stuck up for the Lana character before, but I guess seeing the show without her made me realize that she's definitely not a necessity. They've tried to give her some more aggressive storylines, but she always ends up the damsel in distress. When, and if, Lois finds herself in need of rescuing, it's normally because she's bumbled her way into the thick of things, which tends to be a lot more fun anyway. Plus, I just like how much her and Clark dislike eachother. Reminds me a little of Han and Leia. Let me know what you think.

i was fairly worried,in the beginning of "SmallVille", that the series was going to be a Super-Dawson's Creek ; but,toDay, i'm happy to see the writers & creative team have developed some very unique features in reCalling the Mythos of SuperMan. It's been fun to see the introduction of such future JLA characters as the Flash & Aquaman ; especially, when they throw in the references that true Comic Book fans recognize ---such as the Flash using "Barry Allen" as one of his "fake" identities. i've really enjoyed the way they have introduced the various powers of The Man of Steel , especially how they tied them into teenage development stages. It does seem like Destiny that Jonathan Kent is the ONE Jorel will kill. i like the way they have begun to show more of Lex's dark side, and what the future holds for his relationship with SuperMan---'Believe me Clark', LEXonce said,'OUR Friendship will be the stuff of Legend' i look forward to reading what you all say about this show.

Just had to add that in the Solitude episode, Chloe says that she will die for clark (or to keep his secret?). My bet is on Chole dying.

Lana is essentially the soul of Smallville, and Kristin is mainly a "big reason" why the WB picked up the show. In the season 1 DVD commentary, AL and Miles said the folks at the WB picked up Smallville after just seeing Krisin's audition tape...not knowing who was gonna play Clark. Plus there is a large fan base that watches this show because of Kristin/Lana. So far 2 episodes without Lana have shown...most likely because Kristin was still filming her movie "Partition". Overall ratings have gone up..which is good. Lana and Clark are back together again since season 3, and the move to Thursdays didn't hurt. Plus Masters and Brainiac have put a new twist on the show the comicbook fans seem to be happy with.

I have to agree with Ryan in that the show exists ouside the established comic universe and that we can't look at the comics for what should/will happen in the show. otherwise Chloe wouldn't exist, Pete would be white and eventually marry Lana and become president, lana would have been the only person clark told of his powers, and there wouldn't be a chunk of kryptonite every 5 feet just laying around (i love the show but the fact that there's kryptonite EVERYWHERE cheeses me off. i understand it's hard to write for someone like superman so the need to cancel out his powers at times is a must but frankly it just smacks of lazy writers). frankly i don't think we can safely make any predictions.

Of course Smallville isn't canon, but it still draws several cues from the Superman mythos in other forms. In fact, I don't know that any one version of the comics is considered canon either, with resets, diversions, etc happening (relatively) often. That being said, the show does often gather stories and clues from the various incarnations of the comics and the movies. I believe Lana is alive in the Superman days in pretty much all the versions - she remains in Smallville and is aware of CK being Superman in many of them. Martha being alive in the Superman days is fairly constant as well. I'd say the characters most at risk are: 1. Jonathan Kent - He's died at this point in a couple versions of Superman (the movies, the Golden Age era); he gave that little speech at the end of the last ep about how Clark would be ok and move on if anything happened to him; he seems to be a common target of Jor-El's on the show. 2. Chloe - She's not around at the time CK joins the Daily Planet (in any prior version of the mythos). For years there was speculation that she would eventually *be* Lois Lane by taking her cousin's name as a pseudonym, until Lois actually showed up, and the creators have pretty much admitted in interviews last year that Lois is the Lois that Clark eventually ends up with, so that means they are unlikely to still pull some sort of switcheroo. Plus Chloe dying would be very dramatic, though I don't know that I see that happening yet if there's another season to go. The writers really like giving Clark a friend to share his powers with (though this might open the door to his revealing his powers to Lana). 3. Lionel Luthor - He appears to now be a vessel for Jor-El's will despite acting in day-to-day fashion as the magnificent bastard we've seen for years. My guess is that the Kryptonian knowledge is what's in control and is just using his memories and such to stay secret yet available to Clark as needed - like how he, seeming 100% like Lionel Luthor, came to Chloe with info on Milton Fine aka Brainiac. I could see something he does resulting in his death by the end of the series, though I doubt it would count as killing a loved one of Clark's off. 4. Pete - Sure, Pete survives in the comics to become Lex's eventual running mate on the Presidential ticket, but the show never really could figure out how to use him well. Maybe he'll have a guest appearance to promote the upcoming "Metropolis Mix" CD going on sale and be killed off by Jor-El, giving an emotional death that won't resonate too hard with the plots afterwards (much like when Clark's WIFE died last season, and was only mentioned once since).

Its a little obvious that the voice who claims to be Jor-El will actually turn out to be General Zod. The voice actor, Terance Stamp, played Superman II's Zod. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000654/

Guys, don't consider Smallville "canon". It's not a prequel to the comics or the movies or anything else like that. It exists in its own universe. So saying something like "Chloe wasn't at the planet when Clark and Lois started there" doesn't mean squat. As I said above, that doesn't necessarily mean that Chloe isn't the one who's going to be taking the dirt nap. It just means don't look out for clues. Look within the show.

Well we know it can't be Martha, Jonathan or Lois because they are all still alive when he starts working at the Daily Planet. So I believe that leaves two choices: Lana or Chloe since neither of them show up in the future. I am betting on Lana just because of the angst level and the shock factor. I think Chloe stays because Clark needs someone to confide in as well someone to help him find the answers he needs to various mysteries.
