7th Heaven: the show about sex and drugs

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 22nd 2005 6:34PM

7th HeavenCan someone tell me why 7th Heaven keeps getting praise and awards from family and religious groups? Almost every episode of the show seems to be about drugs, sex, vandalism, or lying. Seriously. Everybody is getting pregnant on the show, whether they are married or not. Simon had an STD worry earlier this season, and lies in just about every episode. I think Mary was rumored to be pregnant one season. Now someone is spreading a rumor around the school that Ruthie (Ruthie!) is pregnant!

Yeah, I know, they "handle the issues responsibly" or some other bullshit. But how good can the Camden parents be at raising their kids if they're all having unprotected, pre-marital sex and lying and everything else? If he wasn't a reverend, I think Child Services would have a permanent stakeout in front of the house.

Call it "family viewing" if you want. I think it's more subversive than South Park.

What the hell is wrong with you? 7th Heaven is a wonderful show. The reason it focuses on sex, drugs etc. is because it is trying to teach kids today to be responsible. Did you overlook that?? I've watched 7th Heaven from the beginning and I will not dare listen to it be dissed. It is a great family drama. Unlike South Park which is very offensive and shouldn't even be on tv!! Kids today do a lot of wrong things: Drugs at 13 yrs old, sex at 12. It is just trying to show you the consequences. How stupid can you be to not realize that?? Sheesh!!

Hey: I love 7th Heaven. This show is based on true life experiences. It shows that whether you are a non-christian or christian that things (sometimes) bad things still happen to everybody. It shows that just because a person has messed up(no matter how bad) that there are still people in this world that are willing to help. I think the mind set of people are that christians should live in this perfect world where everything is all roses and families are perfect-but that's not the case. The difference is that true christians do not cover up the mess...we still mess up..and still go through it...the difference is that we put our faith in a true living God that gets us through those tough times and knows that there is true forgiveness to a heart that is willing to repent!!!

I find the language more offensive in the comments I have read through here than anything the show has put on. Wake up call, these problems do affect good families! We do not see nakedness, or sex scenes as most commercial and shows portray on regular tv or hear foul language. Each situation makes you aware of the problem in raising any family today. I have ten grown children and feel that I could sit with any of my family to view 7th Heaven. I feel personally that these issues such as drugs and sex are handled in an excellent way and our kids are exposed at school to much worse. It sounds like those who hate this show have watched and retained more from the shows than many of us who do enjoy being able to relax and not fear what will come on. If they do not appreciate the show than they can switch that dial any time they want. At least those who do appreciate the show can have an alternative to the many other vulgar shows which are readily available. If there were not shows such as 7th Heaven, DOC, Sue Thomas FBI, Little House, Little Men, Promised Land, Touched by an Angel, Christy, Higher Ground, and Neon Rider I would choose to remove the tv from my home.

You can get STD's with a condom condoms are meant to prevent PREGNANCY though they REDUCE (NOT PREVENT) the risk of obtaining an std... the probability of you getting HIV if u have PROTECTED SEX is about 45 % ... you can search for the details if u dont believe me anyway dont bash 7th heaven it's a nice show trying to promote good moral values something we've lost years now :) have a good day all a med student

Anthony, How did Simon have a STD scare if not from unprotected sex? And how did Sandy get pregnant? This show purports to instill values, yet just shows the hypocrisy of the overly religious. I think that the show is so popular because of the snark value. The mother on this is a psychotic meddler who manipulates her kids into doing what she wants. Three of the kids have married young (just so that they can have sex), two of them in bad relationships. The producers made one daughter "the bad one", who is actually smart for having estranged herself from this crazy bunch. The youngest daughter (played by an unsympathetic person who just can't act) is now running around like a bitch in heat, and the plot lines revolve around the rev and his wife depserately afraid that she'll engage in sexual activity. There was some really creepy pole dancing a few weeks ago... Head over to the Television Without Pity web site and read the forum to find out why we "hate this goddamned show".

Wow! If you even want to try to argue against such a good-quality show, get your facts straight before. None of the Camdens ever had unprotected sex, Mary actually had a baby in marriage (wasn't just "pregnant")...and that's all I'm gonna say. This terribly written and poorly defendable article isn't even worth my time.

Contrary to popular belief, most Christian and family groups are moving towards the middle and ecumenical side of philosophy/ideology/theology. Remember how those groups hated The Simpsons when it first appeared, but now praise it as one of the purest shows ffeaturing a family that always works towards helping each other? The show hasn't changed--the watchdog groups have.

Eh, this is the *only* reason why I like the show. Nice to see some other people finally realizing that the show really is a pit of sex and drugs and depravity. Proves to people that religious people are only better at hiding stuff not that they are better people.
