The Five: Least watchable news personalities

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 26th 2005 4:05PM
anderson cooperWhat makes you like a certain news anchor over another one? Is it his or her appearance? The voice? Professionalism? Sarcasm? There are a lot of reasons news people rise to the big time or get stuck in small markets. I always liked Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings because they seemed like like classy men. I turned to Dan Rather during breaking news because he was just plain batty. I get a kick out of Mike Wallace because of his confrontational attitude. And, I just love Keith Olbermann for his wit, news judgment, and self-deprecating sense of humor.

That said, there are also some talking heads who make me turn the channel. For me, it's the anchor's attitude that generally turns me off. But, I can also be superficial. Here is my list of the five most unwatchable news personalities:

5. Ann Curry Her "genuine" concern about every, single story she reports is just plain fake. A person cannot be in news that long and truly empathize with everything from soldiers being killed during war to the break-up of Nick and Jessica. I just don't buy it. Topping things off, she seems casual, rather than professional, with her delivery. And her breathy voice sends shivers up my spine.
4. Anderson Cooper There. I said it. He bothers me. Sure, he's cute. But, he's a little too cute, ya know? I realize that he's CNN's golden boy right now, but his breathless delivery on each and every story is tiresome and a little stress-inducing. You're reading a teleprompter, Anderson! He treats every story like it's just breaking and he's getting information about it in his ear as he speaks. Chill, buddy. Plus, what's with all the GQ-style photo shoots? Maybe I'm just bitter...
3. Geraldo I know, I know. He never was a real newsman. But, since he appeared on Fox Newschannel for so many years, I'm going to include him. And, he did go into Baghdad with the armed forces (and, famously, got kicked out for revealing strategic military positions). Anyway, Geraldo is a jackass. When he is reporting a news story, whether it be Hurricane Katrina or the Iraq war, it's all about him. God forbid he step out of the view of the camera for a few minutes! And then there's that moustache...
2. Nancy Grace This woman would hold the number one slot, if it weren't for a certain, annoying newcomer. Nancy Grace embodies all that is wrong with 24-hour cable newschannels. She likes to beat to death stories like Robert Blake, Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson, and Natalie Holloway. CNN pawns her off as a legal journalist, which is her background, but she actually is an excuse to have more coverage of "big" stories that have no bearing on the lives of Americans. In Nancy Grace's world, people are guilty. Period.
1. Rita Cosby AKA, Lord Vader. What is up with that voice? Is she a heavy smoker? Why would MSNBC claim victory by stealing her away from FOX Newschannel? Did she sound like this when she was on FOX? Her show on MSNBC it is UN-WATCH-ABLE (yet, it's doing well in ratings). She, too, is guilty of focusing on stories like Natalie Holloway, but her voice is so distracting that it's impossible to pay attention to her nightly topics.

Who bugs you?

Katie Couric just rubs me the wrong way - that scratchy voice, the pretend-to-be-compassionate that just doesn't come across. I'm sure a lot of people find ME annoying, but no one is paying me millions to have my ugly mug piped into millions of homes' T.V. sets each day. Do the networks know this ? I can't be the only one - I won't tune in just because of her - I'd rather watch a pimply-faced 15-year old do the stories.

You're RIGHT. Rita Cosby's voice is like fingernails on a blackboard. Hiring her is like hiring someone with a lisp...only worse. I cannot stand to listen to her, and now her ghouishness with "witnessing the execution" of Tookie Williams is too much. Get her OFF THE AIR!!

Pretty good call. Rita and Nancy are a good reason to use the mute button. Geraldo is joke, Anderson just gives me the creeps and Ann can't even read the prompter well. (I think there's something seriously wrong with her) None of these people should even qualify as "news" personalities. Seems like the real news folks are either dying off, retiring or looking for jobs. I can't believe CNN could let Aaron Brown get away in favor of Cooper. Seems like a real decline in real news on the news channels of late. There's plenty of crap channels for the likes of the 5 you mentioned. Let's demand that we get real news people reporting the news!

Nancy Grace may be #2 in your book but that woman knows what she is talking about. EG - Peterson - she got that right from the get-go. Out for herself? No - you obviously did not see the real Nancy with Dan Horowitz and how she covered that tragic incident. Annoying yes - but knowledgeable and informed...YES! I agree with #1 though - Rita Cosby's voice makes me turn off my tv.

This is what happens when the marketers, more concerned with advertising than with content, take over television news -- programs designed for the mindset of old people overly fearful about crime (thanks to distortions from local TV newscasts) and shopgirls more concerned with gossip than genuine news. I increasingly sense that Anderson Cooper got his job more because Gloria Vanderbilt is his mom (not to mention the help he must have from the Yalie alumni network) than for any genuine talent. Rivera's been a joke since the late seventies, Nancy Grace is a shrew and Rita Cosby...well, I can't think of any words to best describe her. Ann Curry has become a parody of herself, as lately has become the case for many TV newswomen. (To her credit, Paula Zahn tries to stand above it all and usually focuses on hard news. But since there's a double standard for men and women and she's approaching 50, poor Paula will probably be next to go, as some CNN honchos are probably more concerned with her legs than her news ability.)

Why are the cable channels intent on finding women with grating, whining, nasal, annoying (you pick one!) voices? Pick one of those listed here, from Van Susteren to Nancy Grace, and you'll find a desperate need for vocal training. Or a significant reason to encourage another career. I agree with the comment about the men on Fox and Friends, however. They're so intent on being jovial that they sometimes forget we tune in for information!

Thank you for dinging Rita Cosby (any realtion to Norm??No, wait, that's Crosby) possibly one of the most unwatchable, unlistenable personalities in the history of the medium. If she asks one more suffering person "how much are you suffering?" I may lose my lunch. Her attempts to milk pathos and bathos from these poor folks is exploitation of the worst sort. There ought to be a steel-cage death match between her and Dr. Phil, where the winner gets euthanized.
