Doctor Who 'Christmas Invasion' countdown part three

by Martin Conaghan, posted Dec 11th 2005 6:35PM
SycoraxEarlier tonight, just before Top Gear aired on BBC TWO here in the U.K. a preview trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Day special, The Christmas Invasion splashed across my television screen. Thankfully, Top Gear is on my Sky+ planner (with five minutes padding on either side of the show), so the trailer recorded.

The most recent preview is 30-seconds long, and features plenty of mouth-watering action from the forthcoming special, including a fantastic action shot of the TARDIS crash-landing on a London council estate, and a shot of 30 St. Mary's Axe being destroyed by an invading alien force.

Some familiar characters from the recent series are also back, including Rose Tyler's boyfriend, Mickey Smith, her mum Jackie and Harriet Jones (MP for Flydale North, but now Prime Minister of Great Britain) along with some serious looking aliens called the Sycorax.

Thankfully, it's also available on the Doctor Who website in Real Media format (for those without Sky+) and you can find out more about the special at the WikiPedia entry (warning: spoilers).

I already had high expectations for The Christmas Invasion. Now they've gone stratospheric.

Region 1 DVDs are going to be released on February 14th next year - the release was delayed (Regions 2 and 4 came out last month) while they tried to find a US buyer, as DVD releases and rights would have been part of the deal.

You can't even buy the DVDs for Region 1. No wonder the P2P market thrives .....

It's the same trailer on the website as the one that aired on BBC TWO.

I personally thought the Tardis shot was pathetic and cheap looking.

The screaming sound you hear in the background is ITV executives watching their Christmas Day ratings disappear... And the BBC have been trying to sell Who to the US all year, but no network is willing to pay the BBC what they want for it - it'll probably end up on BBC America when the've exhausted all other avenues for selling it. Though if The Christmas Invasion lives up to the trailers and some of the other images released from it, I suspect they might be getting a new wave of interest in the series soon. If the US networks have any sense that is.

Hello again, to answer my own question I just posted... this is a NEW promo... not the teaser. It's amazing! Everyone has to check it out! I hadn't realized that the BBC had released the new trailer promo right on the heels of the new teaser that was released on Friday. Was this the same teaser that is available on the BBC -Doctor Who site? The image of the Sycorax with this posting is not in the most recent teaser available on the Doctor Who site, so if this image comes from BBC Two, it may be a different promo.
