AFI TV Programs of the Year nominees announced

by Keith McDuffee, posted Dec 12th 2005 11:39AM
afi logoThe American Film Institute's AFI Awards nominees were recently announced for both television and movies (thanks Dave!), many of which I'm pleased to see listed. Their TV Programs of the Year selections are:

  • 24
  • Battlestar Galactica
  • Deadwood
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • House
  • Lost
  • Rescue Me
  • Sleeper Cell
  • Sometimes in April
  • Veronica Mars
I have to admit that I've never heard of Sometimes in April. Anyone care to comment on why we should be watching it? Because it's sitting amongst a goldmine list of television. Awards will be given on January 13.

At the risk of giving too much credit to the show, I'm inclined to think that the femme fatale nature of the female Cylons could very well be intentional (i.e., not [only] a cheap ploy to reel in men, like, um, Seven of Nine)--number 6 can use Balthar like she does because he's a womanizer and himself uses beautiful women to feed his ego. The Sharon Cylon copies appealed to Tyrol and Helo because they wanted to take care of her/them. The Cylons exploit gender stereotypes for all they're worth. And, nope, I haven't made it to season 2 yet, either.

Sugar, im sorry, you cant preach to me about inequality in tv show characters if you dont even take the time and effort to watch thme in their first run. You shouldnt be making such false statments like that if you are going to be ignorant of the facts at hand.

No - I have not, I tend towards DVD watching of serial television shows. (Tivoless) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_%282003%29#Cast He is not listed here, however and I doubt whomever they have for the remaining male cylons...they will have trouble getting George Clooney quality. I don't dislike the show. I just got a little tired of the blonde and would like some equality in my slutty scenes and gratuitous eye candy.

Sugar, did you not see the season 2 episode of BSG "The Farm" You trying to tell me the "dr" cylon is not attractive? Please also remember that we have technically only seen six total cylons of the supposed 12 human cylon models.

Arrested Development won the Emmy. so I am not that upset AFI left it off... Is AFI even that prestigeous compared to an emmy? I think people misunderstand the purpose of lost. Its not about revealing secrets... although that is a fun part. It's about the human character and I think the flashbacks are what JJ Abrams cares more about. I like Grey's Anatomy becuase it is based in Seatle and the characters for the most part are interesting, although I think Boston Legal is better.

I've seen Sometimes in April, and although I feel guilty for saying it, I actually did think it wasnt that good. Yeah, I know its about the genocide, but it just didnt tell the story in a compelling way. Hotel Rwanda was a MUCH better movie and should have deserved a best picture nod. Not all movies about genocide have to be good.

Battlestar Galactica is an excellent choice. I do feel Lost is a bit overrated, but I guess that happens when it's talked about all the time. And when at Thanksgiving dinner, some people just kept having their own little conversation about it. It just made it feel like a glorified soap opera.

Sure, Arrested Development was an oversight, but let's give them a little credit for creating a pretty progressive list over all. Let's not forget that Everybody Loves Raymond won the comedy Emmy this year and that The West Wing was nominated -again- for the drama Emmy despite several lackluster seasons.

I agree with Seth - clearly AFI blows at analyzing television. How many times do I have to say it? Arrested Development is the best television show, EVER! I would have little issue with this list, had they included AD. Grey's Anatomy - could easily have been taken off to make room. The people that watch the show could barely come up with many reasons to watch the show...http://www.tvsquad.com/2005/11/30/convince-me-to-watch-it-greys-anatomy/ So, let's review - the AFI missed the best show ever for their little list. Grey's Anatomy is a good show - not a great show. Veronica Mars would never make the list if weren't Buffy...staking the ground before her. Lost - is all about the hype. 24 - is all about the Jack n' a Bomb. Deadwood, Rescue Me and House - all about being an ass, a smart-ass...that gets things done, does it their way, does it with big water hoses and such, but still an ass. Sleeper Cell - see 24, but its 'smarter' like an electronic Jack n' the Bomb with colored lights that flash and blink. Battlestar Galactica - hot religious, zealot, robot women make good T.V., but no one has yet been able to answer this - Why are the guy robots so 'unattractive'??? Why isn't there a like a Brad Pitt or George Clooney model??? What the hell??? Do they not want women to watch the show? I mean, can't I get something nice to look at? I have to watch that skinny blonde whore wiggle and slither around episode after episode, equal pay for equal time!!! Darn it. Sometimes in April - as for this one, it's about f@*&ing genocide. It deserves to be on the list, even it sucked...which I am sure it didn't and I promise to rent it...soon. Plus, if you really feel like crying check this show out: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/seoultrain/index.html In conclusion, best of lists that do not include Arrested Development are stupid.
