Arrested Development: Prison Break-In

by Ryan j Budke, posted Dec 13th 2005 1:09PM
arrested developmentAs one of my friends pointed out to me during the show, Fox sure gave Arrested Development a huge push last night."Watch new episodes every Monday" "Watch clips on VCast" "Coming up next, an all-time classic episode". Uhmmmm... Is Fox aware that they cancelled this show? They did the same thing last year; they cut the episode order back and then they started pimping it like crazy. I just don't get the reasoning behind doing something like that. This is why I will never be a studio executive. I just make too much sense. Ah well, On with the show!

It's the time of year again for The Bluth Company's annual fundraiser. The past couple of years, they've collected money for TBA. No, that's not a disease, they just couldn't decide what to raise the money for. This year however, they've got something very specific in mind: Graft versus host syndrome. It's when someone who gets a hair transplant's plugs don't "take", and the graft starts fighting their immune system. They're going to hold the fundraiser at the prison. Yea...great idea. Of course, this the Bluth family, so everyone has their own motives. Including the warden (played hilariously by James Lipton), who is not only seducing Lucille, but also using the fundraiser as a stage for his play.

As it turns out, Michael seems to be the only one upset that his mother is planning on being "intimate" with Warden Gentle. Even George Sr. isn't taken aback when Michael tells him. Well, he is, but it's fake. It turns out that Lucille and George Sr. planned the seduction so that George Sr. could escape. At the gala, all the patrons have shown up expecting to show some love for an incurable disease. When they find out that, A) Tobias is the only one known with the affliction, and B) it's stopped if he'd just remove his hair plugs, things get out of hand quickly, and a riot breaks loose. Halfway into his escape, George Sr. realizes his feelings for his wife and goes to her in the conjugal trailer.

It's funny to think that Jeffrey Tambor was only scheduled to be on the show for a few episodes. I can't imagine this show without him, he steals just about every scene he's in, as either George Sr. or Oscar. I love the way Maebe barely attempts to cover the fact that she's a movie producer. She's so dry and fits right in with the rest of the family. There's just too much goodness to mention and if you're not watching this show, you should be. Damn you Fox! Let me know what you think.

Maebe as a film producer has made her character from just kind of there to a character I regularly look forward to seeing. And the fact that she still treats the job like she did school, passing the buck so casually. Its classic. This episode did feel a touch off. But I laughed all the same. AD on a bad night is still the greatest show on TV. What I loved was the flashback/forward joke with GOB. They flashback to the first time he saw his parents in the conjugal trailer and to forget it, he asks for a pill in his back pocket. I.E. A Forget Me Now, which is from a joke not made until the third season. So they literally created a new joke for a past episode so a future episode can reference a past episode. Brillance.

Is it me or does Fox only proomote this show only when this show is on? I don't think I've seen that many plugs for the show since last season. I thought last nights episode was good. Definitely needed a rewatch. Lots of little jokes I missed the first time. A few gems: GOB videotaping Tobias' affliction with a repulsed George Michael, "George Michael, put your face down by Tobias' drainage shunt." George to Michael, who's just accused him of planning an escape, "How dare you, I should shave your head and sit you under that (security)camera all night." Oscar trying to cremate Busters turtle that died from eating all of Oscars marijuana. Brilliant!

Another solid ep, obviously. Interesting tidbit I just noticed while watching tonight's Seinfeld on TBS at 6:30; Jerry, doing stand-up, wonders if there's such a thing as a head rejecting a hair transplant. So 2 Seinfeld references in one episode.

Tobias was so, freaking repulsive in this episode. The funniest moment - narrating the exchange between George Michael and Maebe about bunking together in the prison: "This was the happiest moment in George Michael's life." Poor George Michael. He gets locked up with Tobias instead: "This was the saddest moment in George Michael's life." Golden Globes didn't include it...too bad. Darn Desperate Housewives - that show isn't funny. Not "HaHa" funny, at least.

thank you lampbane. Granted, what is happening to the show sure LOOKS like cancellation but until we hear official word from Fox that they are no longer carrying the show, IT IS NOT CANCELLED.

The show has NOT been cancelled yet. Repeat, NOT cancelled. Someone at Fox was probably like, "come on, maybe we can get the ratings up, get it renewed..."

Good grief, I was laughing so hard this episode. I loved George Sr's insensitivity with the ovarian cancer comment. Poor George Michael having to bunk with Uncle T-bag again. I think FOX might start promo'ing the hell out of AD (at least in relative terms) so that they can "prove" that they did like the show all along and it's not their fault. But they're not fooling anybody.

This wasn't the first time Oscar had been knocked out by a lid!

Actually, I found this episode to not be that great (compared to last week's). It had some halarious moments, but the plotting was off. Though I did like the dig at Prison Break, whose repeats replaced Arrested during sweeps. BTW, a co-worker noticed that during the prison brawl, a prisoner escapes using the jetpack!
