Arrested Development UN-Canceled ?

First of all, thank you to all of our readers who sent in the updates regarding Arrested Development and its possible salvation. We were listening, and have been on the phone with the networks all day. We were hoping to be able to break some news for you and get a confirmation from either Showtime or ABC about them picking the show up. Hopefully, we'll be able to bring you some more information very soon. Unfortunately, for the time being, all that we were able to get from either network is a big fat "No Comment". Fortunately for all of us Arrested Development freaks, we were able to get "No Comment", which, as everyone knows, means they just don't want to talk about it yet. So now that it seems that both networks are interested in the show, which would you rather see it go to?

Some of us around here at the TV Squad offices would like to see Arrested Development on Showtime because it would allow the writers to have more freedom. Personally, I think they do a fantastic job with the "censoring", and even use it to their advantage (Buster's bleeped outburst from last season comes to mind). It seems that after cementing itself as a big network for dramas last year (Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy), this year it's trying to prove it can do quirky comedy. Heather Graham's new vehicle, Emily's Reasons Why Not, is the first among many new comedies that they'll be debuting. I think ABC would be the better choice. Let me know what you think.

As always, check back here at TV Squad and if there's any breaking news, we'll be the first to report it.

I'm thinking Showtime is better. ABC would need the show to have a big audience (just like FOX) and would cancel it if it didn't. Showtime could just feed off the critical acclaim and good press to keep the show on (and would gain subscribers). There would be fewer episodes in a Showtime season, but as long as they're good and the network doesn't screw with them, I can live with that. But I could live with ABC if they treated the show the right way. I just hope one of them picks it up.

AD is absolutely brilliant and Fox has moved it around so many times, it's no wonder that it never achieved a large loyal audience. Now Fox is showing some new episodes out of sequence, (and no, I'm not talking about repeats). They've made a mess of it. I've had a lot of "TV" conversations with friends and the ones who've seen AD thought it was terrific, but the usual comment I got was, "whatever happened to it? Is it still on?" I got Showtime to watch "Fat Actress", which was baaad, and I don't trust network TV, but I would find AD even if it were put on SPIKE!! Just let it live. I wish NBC or HBO were interested.

Why not on Comedy Central?? This seems to be the most fitting place for this show. I believe the same people that enjoy many programs on Comedy Central would love to be watching Arrested Development instead of Drawn Together or more Reno 911!. It's time that they added a smart comedy to their lineup

Let's give ABC a chance, people. I think ABC has the cash and the brainpower (unlike FAUX) to make a hit out of Arrested Development. What comedy they do have is faltering, and I think if they do pick up AD, they might be desperate enough to make it work. And I'm NOT just speaking as someone who is not a Showtime subscrber, although I certainly wouldn't want to wait until the DVD releases to see my favorite show. Season's Greetings, and let's all hope AD gets picked up by either one as a Christmas present.

AD would be great on NBC, with The Office and My Name is Earl, but I think AD is just too expensive for NBC. I'm a little leary of it going to ABC. LOST is one of my favorite shows, so I have nothing against the network, but as one commentor earlier said, I could see it not doing well and ABC going oh, well and canceling it like they do to so many shows they give no time to develop. FOX did have a lot of patience with this show. Is there no longer any talks of it going to F/X? Really, as long as it is on some channel and continues to have new episodes, I don't care where it is. I just need my Bluth fix.

I too would rather see AD go to NBC. It is re-establishing itself as the network of great comedy, and I think the show would have the most success there.

Personally, I don't care which network gets AD as long as it's still on and I can watch new episodes. I like the idea of Showtime picking it up, but that would mean I would have to subscribe to HBO and Showtime. Which with DirecTV would cost me $10 more a month. Oh well, I'm more than willing to pay it. Just don't let the show die!

I'm voting for Showtime too. I haven't watched ABC for comedies (Desperate Housewives doesn't count) since I was like 12 or 13 and the T.G.I.F. lineup was the best thing to look forward to on Friday nights. While it'd be easier for me to watch it on ABC, having it on Showtime would be a reason to finally upgrade my basic cable and watch via digital cable or Direct TV.

Dan, You just described my must-see night of TV. I actually had thought that AD fitting in well with "The Office" on NBC, but I hadn't made the Scrubs connection (though I love the show).
