Convince me to watch it: Joey

by Ryan j Budke, posted Dec 22nd 2005 10:32PM
Ok, you guys have begged for it, you've yearned for it; the next "Convince Me To Watch It". This week, I'm asking you guys to stick up for Joey on NBC. I was addicted to Friends, and watched most of the first season of Joey. Yet, as much as it tried, for me, Joey never captured the spirit and comradery Friends had. This year, that feeling has been replaced by How I Met Your Mother. For me, that's the show I want to watch to feel part of the dysfunctional family that we all yearn for. I know Joey still has quite the cult following, and this season they've made a couple of changes to the formula to draw in some new viewers, but I want to hear from you guys; am I missing anything by not watching this? If Joey Tribbiani floats your boat, let me know, but if you think this show should go down like the Titanic, I want to know as well.

I agree with #16 - Jennifer Coolidge (she plays Joey's agent) steals every scene she's in.

If there were any reason to watch this show, and I am not saying there is any reason to watch this show, but if there were then it would be Jennifer Coolidge.

I like the show a lot. At first, I thought it was bland but later on in the first season, I really got into the show. I just like the stupid comedy in it, it's guilty immaturity.

If you enjoyed Season 1 even slightly, then you should defiantly check out Season 2. Its a huge improvement. While the show still isnt great, Season 2 is a big step up and, with time, I think Joey could be a great show. The show is dumb, and hardly ever makes sense, but it IS funny. The characters will change week to week for the sake of a joke, and a lot of what happened in Friends is forgotten. An example of this is the episode where Joey learns to play poker. We know from Friends that Joey can play poker, but it is forgotten for the jokes in that episode. The show cant handle on going story lines at all. Alex being in love with Joey is ridiculous, but the jokes still play well. So, to sum up, the show may be stupid most of the time, but Season 2 has been consistently funny, even if it doesnt make much sense. Its so over the top, but it still makes me laugh. But nowhere near as good as How I Met Your Mother. Id give it another shot!

The problem with the show is very simple: it's not really funny. To me it doesn't matter how traditional a sitcom is or how laugh-track free it is. It's all about the funny and Joey just doesn't have it which puts him on par with Seinfeld and people inexplicably loved that show, so there you go.
Watch it if you wanna, but don't expect much more than an occasional chuckle.

Joey is alright, I actually prefer the sense of humour in it to later Friends, just a bit more surreal and vicious.

and as an aside, Fraiser Crane is a mere pup compared to the residents of Coronation Street, a British soap. Has been running non-stop since the sixties, and at least one character (Ken Barlow) has been in it, and played by the same actor, all the way through.

i watched it for the first time since the first couple ones of the first season tonight.

I DEFINITELY enjoyed it ALOT more - but nowhere near "Friends" or even "How I Met Your Mother".

It could see it being a "King of Queens" or "Will & Grace" in my book. Worth watching as long as NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else is on.

Alright, this show is purely kept alive solely out of memory for Friends. The writing could be tighter, and the laughter is nonexistent(unless canned laughter is your thing). It's just alright, nothing original, using "funny" cliches and stereotypes. Frasier was an anomaly considering it was original. The difference between Joey and Frasier is that Frasier wasn't a lead character on Cheers. The show centered on the staff, primarily the Sam-Diane relationship. So when Frasier came out on his own, the writers could explore the goldmine that is his character. Joey already grew into his character on Friends, it was fully developed and well-rounded. So their was no more room to grow on his own show without overhauling the character into something that isn't Joey at all. In an interview I heard they were going to make Joey "smarter and wittier." That's just taking away from the comedic genius that is Joey Tribbiani from Friends. The show is fluff trying to keep Friends alive. In my opinion, just let Friends rest in peace. Put Joey back into Friend-ly syndication.

Fraiser Crane is the longest running television character, right night to Detective Lennie Briscoe and Detective John Munch, LDodson.

I've tried to watch this show many times. It's just not funny. Singlely, the entire cast of Friends is not funny. Together, they were great. I'd bet that's why Jennifer Aniston is the only one of the group to have an on going movie career.

I'm also willing to bet that the character of Fraiser Crane lasted as long as it did because he wasn't anywhere near as developed as Joey Tribiani. It was almost like dealing with a clean slate. The same for Detective Lennie Briscoe and Detective John Munch. We know too much about Joey. He's a clueless moron who cannot act yet remains loveable.
