Project Runway 2: The Lingerie Competition
Have you ever watched your mom cook in the kitchen? You get to find out all her
little tricks, like how she puts ketchup inthe baked beans, or how the secret ingredient in her trademark casserole is
actually Cheez Whiz. Sometimes seeing how things are made takes the appeal out of them. Lingerie is the same way. It's
sexy when you skip to the end-product, but not so much when you witness all the emotional breakdowns that occur while
making a garter belt.
For this week's competition, the designers were given 30 minutes to draft a concept for a new line of lingerie. They then had to present their ideas to Heidi, who would choose 4 designers to develop the best ideas. The designers would then pick teams from the remaining contestants to help design their lingerie lines.
Heidi chose Daniel V. who had a "Revenge" concept, which actually sounded pretty cool. It was basically lingerie that was supposed to look like a jilted girlfriend had raided her ex-boyfriend's closet and cut up his old dress shirts and ties, turning them into bras and panties. Santino was the second pick who concepted a "Heidi's Homeland" idea that basically supposed to be sexy leiderhosen. But more on that later. Diana (who knew she ever thought about sex) concepted a "Goddess" design which was basically S&M meets green billowy fabric. (Side note- Every time I say "billowy fabric" I think of Deb in Napoleon Dynamite.) And finally, Daniel Franco squeaked in with his "Lovemaking" idea. Daniel absolutely seduced Heidi with this concept. It was one of the weirdest moments in reality television history. Here is this gorgeous supermodelwho is 18 months pregnant, and this little designer man is sitting next to her explaining that there is a difference between humping and making love, and that he wants to make lingerie to represent lovemaking. The whole time he's explaining this to her, he's staring deeply into her eyes and shooting indecent thoughts into her brain with his evil laser tractor beams. I think the last thing he said was, "Heidi, I would love to show you something beautiful." Heidi was speechless. She just turned to the camera and smiled.
Right away there was trouble with Santino's team. Santino almost lost his designs at the fabric store, and he started to fight with his teammate Emmett from the get-go. He didn't think that Emmett was very good at sewing, while Emmett doubted Santino's concept. Santino does not design things that are simple and he has a tendency to over-embelish and that is never good when designing lingerie. As Tim writes on his blog, he final designs lacked sex appeal and looked like "marzipan costumes for a BlackForest production of The Nutcracker."
Daniel Franco's team was also riddled with problems, namely Franco's obsessive sewing techniques. He kept putting things together and then taking them apart and then putting them back together. He pushed his teammates, Chloe and Klara, to have about 13 different breakdowns. He just kept telling them to trust his design and leadership and if anything went wrong, he would take the blame.
Daniel V.'s team worked together pretty effortlessly. Although, there were several homo-erotic moments between Daniel and Andrae. But I was happy that this week marked the first episode where Andrae didn't have an emotional breakdown on the runway. Perhaps he was too busy staring deeply into Daniel V.'s hipster bangs to let his emotions get out of control. Diana's team (Team SuperNerd) also worked well together on her S&M designs. The only real speed bump came when the models showed up and one of the models (Cara) had to be coached into wearing her assigned garment. She didn't like it because the bottom was a thong, and she thought the top barely covered her tiny boobies. (But it totally did cover her little micro-boobs.) Apparently, this model has been a problem before, and has complained about not liking when her hair is piled on top of her head. Diana's attitude was sorta, "If you don't like to do these things then maybe you need another job." I loved it! Who knew that the SuperNerd had such a big set of balls on her.
At the runway show, Daniel V.'s "Revenge" was the winner, but I think he won by default. I thought his concept didn't really materialize itself well. I thought it just looked like black bras and panties worn with a necktie. Tim thought it looked like a Playboy bunny rip-off and I have to agree. Santino almost got the ax this week with his carnival designs, and I really think that it should have been him that got "outed." During elimination, he almost got into a screaming match with the judges and he blamed everything on Emmett. Daniel Franco, on the other hand, took full responsibility for his lackluster designs (judges thought they looked too Joan Collins and too repetitive). In the end, Daniel Franco got sent home, but he went out with his head held high. He graciously thanked the judges for the(second) opportunity and was greeted backstage by tears from his fellow designers. Even Tim (who came out of nowhere) commended him for his integrity. It really should have been Santino who got sent home. His designs were atrocious and his behavior during elimination was bad, but let's face it...he makes for good TV. Daniel Franco was just too zen for his own good.
