Drunken Housewives: Bree loves the bottle

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Dec 27th 2005 6:02PM
Marcia CrossApparently Bree Van De Kamp can't handle the stress. After finding out that her husband Rex was murdered and then witnessing the death of the man responsible, she's having trouble dealing with well... everything. Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry says that we can expect Bree (played by Marcia Cross) to start hitting the bottle a bit excessively. Some major confrontations with her fellow Wisteria Lane neighbors are also in the works. However, while some people may wonder where all this is coming from, Cherry reminds us to recall anytime that the pressure has weighed down on Bree in the past. "Chart it back and you'll see so many moments where she just goes for the wine," he says. This comes about a year after The OC pulled the same stunt with Kirsten and so far the show hasn't been able to get past it. She's "recovered," but the storylines haven't. Hopefully the same won't happen to DH. Oh well, let the booze Olympics begin.

Wow, making someone on the show an alcoholic ... how original! What next - someone having a baby? Ted McGinley joins the cast? Susan Meyer straps on some water skis and heads for the nearest shark pit?

The thing is though that as the producers have mentioned, the signs that Bree has an alcohol problem have always been there. Whenever she's stressed she hits the red wine, and between Rex dying, George being a murderer and that brat of son of hers about to become a really nasty blackmailer she's got stress. So it's not so much a case of her suddenly becoming an alcoholic as the producers being more overt in letting us know that she has a problem with booze. It's less shocking that Bree is alcohol dependent than it would be if, for her to sudenly start bedding down with Suzan for some hot lesbian action (not that there's be anything wrong with that).

The fact that they had to trumpet it rather than keep it a secret from the fans seems to me to be a sign that the show is in serious slippage, ratings-wise or at least when it comes to its water cooler buzzworthy quotient.

Let's think positively about this. Maybe she'll be more like all those "fun" alcoholics we've seen on TV in the past, like Foster Brooks or Otis the town drunk from Mayberry. Hopefully the mouse network will steer the DH writers to write her character as a massive backlash to Political Correctness and highlight the cool side of drinking. Like blackouts and throwing up.

As long as she doesn't realise the error of her ways and it turns into a big "after school special" thing then thats okay with me. Wonder what a drunk Bree would be like, would she not say her Ps and Qs perhaps?
