Jennifer Garner? Never heard of her.

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Dec 27th 2005 10:57AM

Jennifer AffleckAnd now you won't. The Alias star, and actress formerly known as Jennifer Garner, has officially taken her husband's last name. Garner and Ben Affleck, or I suppose I should say Affleck and Affleck, married six months ago in June. She gave birth to their first daughter, Violet Ann, earlier this month. Now this is something that you don't usually hear about. It seems rare these days for a Hollywood marriage to last long enough for the wife to even have a chance to change her last name. But Jen and Ben do seem pretty happy and it is a nice gesture for her to share the same surname as her child. However, this does seem like a question for our female readers... duh. So what do you ladies think? Did Garner make the right choice or is she breaking some weird code being a professional woman and all? Comment away and if you don't mind, tell us how you handled it in the following poll (after the jump).

My Husband's Last Name
I'm married, but I took his
I'm married, but I kept my own
I plan to marry and take his
I plan to marry and keep mine

Jennifer Garner has such a beautiful perfect actress name. She is crazy to drop her name in exchange for Afflecks. I wouldn't have been surprised if she had added his last name after her last name. That to me is a better professional move. She will always be Jennifer Garner in my books.

It'll never stick. Just wait and see... you won't see it. The name she has/had is ingrained into her by the world. Could "The Artist Formerly Known As Jennifer Garner" be far off???? Hmm...? Chris McCaw-Sinclair (who unofficially takes on his partner's surname)

Joanne Whalley Kilmer is another that comes to mind. That didn't work out so well, either.

about Jen i think she should keep HER OWN name for her job
i mean she can be called jennifer afleck for the important things like credit card , identity card ect , but all her fans knows her as JENNIFER GARNER , her name has to be famous cause she did her movies and series , ben afleck didnt ! thats her shows ! she makes her famous and i really think she should be very very proud of her last name , really

I love Jennifer Garner to death, but I think changing her name professionally to Affleck would be a mistake. Doesn't really change who she is though so I don't see why it s such a big deal. I think if she does change it to Jennifer Affleck we will be able to not get confused becasue look at how much were talkign about it now. Jennifer Affleck will be stuck in our minds anyway! lol
and Eliane, considering how other people handle their problems in Hollywood Jen is doing great. It's not like she wanted her realtionships to fail, she couldn't control that. I think we should all just be happy for the girl! No matter the name!

I think it is cute but she should definitely go with Garner Affleck. I think people would recognize Jennifer Affleck but it would take getting use to. As long as they are happy who cares. If I get married I would definitely ake my hubby's name and keep my own as well.

There hasn't been any official word from her camp that JG has changed her name in the professional world to Affleck, so until then, I'll bet that she's just using that name in her "private" life. I don't think whether or not she changes it professionally is a barometer to the success of their marriage, but it could help to further cement them as a couple. Now if everyone would just stop fussing over it...That alone makes it an issue. Best wishes to her and Ben (my crush!). They seem destined to succeed.

I have no opinion on whether JG changes her name personally, but if she plans to change her name professionally, that seems like a mistake to me when she is already an established actress under the name Jennifer Garner.

Farrah Fawcett Majors, Rebecca Romijn Stamos, Meredith Baxter Birney, these things tend to work out not so well in the end. Robin Wright Penn is the exception (so far). Then of course there were the Roseanne Barr/Arnold and Pamela Anderson/Lee fiascos.

Just keep the name you have when you get famous, b/c it's hard enough to get the general public to remember one name, let alone three or four. Chris Evert Lloyd was still correcting people ("It's just Chris Evert") years after her divorce.

Imagine if Elizabeth Taylor had changed her name professionally every time she got married. Yikes. She was smart about keeping her name if nothing else.

I am happy for Jen now and I hope that she has made the right choice for herself. I also hope, though, that this change is only personally and not professionally. No offense to Ben or anyhting, but I really don't want to see her as Jennifer Affleck for the rest of Alias or in her movies. Jennifer Garner-Affleck wouldn't be that bad, but I think she should stay with Jennifer Garner professionally. Personally, when I get married, I'm dropping my maiden name and taking my husband's name, but I'm not known to the world by one name and I think she should stay with Jennifer Garner professionally, at least for the rest of the series of Alias. However, are the credits for Catch & Release gonna have her as Jennifer Affleck, when the trailer's already out and showing her as Jennifer Garner? I think it really confuses people, but that's just my opinion.
